NYC: JUDI MARK IS DANCING THROUGH LIFE
Judi Mark brings her one woman show, "Dancing Through Life," to Times Squares' WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 ) at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 20th. Musical director is Tex Arnold, with direction by Jeff Harnar. Judi's autobiographical show combines song, dance and select film clips to pay homage to the ladies who danced on Broadway and the Silver Screen: Ginger Rogers, Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Carmen Miranda, Donna McKechnie and more. NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: STEVEN CHERA - SMILE CD RELEASE CELEBRATION
Steven Chera will perform atTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Thursday, May 1st at 9:30 pm and Tuesday, May 20th at 7:00 pm. Chera is a singer/ song stylist of traditional pop, jazz, & easy listening. Over his life-long career as a singer he has developed an eclectic range of shows featuring music from the 1930s/ 1940s jazz standards, 1950s rock, to the swinging hits of the 1960s & 70s. Lately Steven has been working on his NEW CD "Smile", which he will introduce at this show. The title song "Smile" is a classic composed by Charlie Chalpin and made famous by the great Nat King Cole. Steven also does Mr. Cole's "Mona Lisa", another all time classic. He will also be performing "All The Way" and "Birth of The Blues" both made famous by Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles's "Georgia on My Mind", and "Hallelujah I Just Love Here So". There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: SETH BISEN-HERSH'S 300TH SHOWCASE EXTRAVAGANZA
As of this May, Seth Bisen-Hersh will have produced, emceed and accompanied 300 showcases. To celebrate he is putting on the 300th Showcase Extravaganza at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) consisting of six concerts of his work with 84 showcase alumni. Show are scheduled for Tuesdays, May 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th; Friday, May 9th; and Thursday, May 22nd, all shows at 7:00 pm. Each evening will contain 20 songs from his musicals and cabarets over the years. There is a $12 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: A BENEFIT FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AT STAGE 72
A Benefit For Alzheimer's Disease in Loving Memory Of Ethel Scheer will be held at STAGE 72 (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2590) on Tuesday, May 20th at 7:00 pm by Courtney Scheer. Scheer is a singer/ actress/ songwriter living in the heart of NYC making music and fulfilling her dreams. All proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Ethel Scheer - loving wife, mother and grandmother - who recently passed away from the disease. She was a special, fun-loving, and kind hearted woman who always had a smile on her face. The show will honor her memory through the arts and help to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: TAMARA TUNIE WITH SOUNDS OF PITTSBURGH
Tamara Tunie celebrates the music of the legendary artists that hail from Pittsburgh, PA: the city of Three Rivers in her show at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, May 20th at 7:00 pm & 27th at 9:30 pm. From Lena Horne and Henry Mancini, to Phyllis Hyman and George Benson, Tamara will celebrate the variety of composers and singers in two concerts at 54 Below. Renowned for her starring roles in films such as FLIGHT with Denzel Washington, television series like "Law and Order: SVU" and the Sundance Channel's "The Red Road" and on Broadway in Julius Ceasar and Dreamgirls, Ms. Tunie holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Carnegie Mellon University, and has performed in jazz concerts at the Allen Room/ Jazz at Lincoln Center and Feinstein's with incomparable musicians such as Mike Renzi, Ted Firth, and Roger Humphries. She has also performed for the Mabel Mercer Foundation at Town Hall and at Symphony Space, bringing down the house with music from Billie "Lady Day" Holiday to Cole Porter. Her performances in All That Jazz have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Penn State University/Allegheny County's Student Scholarship Fund. There is a $35-$45 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
NYC: VIVIAN REED, HUMAN DYNAMO AT 54 BELOW
After packing 54 to the rafters in November, multi-award-winning singer, actress & dancer Vivian Reed returns to54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, May 20th at 9:30 pm with her 'Human Dynamo' show. Reed presents her passionate and powerful vocal stylings in unique arrangements of an eclectic lineup of R&B, jazz, gospel and musical theater songs. Through selections from her critically acclaimed Broadway performance in Bubbling Brown Sugar, as well as from Three Mo' Divas, her concerts and international nightclub appearances, the two-time Tony Award nominee - who is the recipient of a Drama Desk Award, a Theatre World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award, among others - pays tribute to the people who have had a profound effect on her career. Accompanied by two pianists, a bassist, a drummer and two background singers, her high-energy show also features special guests and a salute to Harold Arlen, with a preview of songs from One for My Baby, a new musical in progress. There is a $40-$50 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
NYC: SIMON GREEN: SO, THIS THEN IS LIFE
59E59 Theaters presents the US premiere of SIMON GREEN: SO, THIS THEN IS LIFE, created by Simon Green and David Shrubsole, performed by Mr. Green, with musical arrangement and accompaniment by Mr. Shrubsole. The show explores paths un-trod, mistakes repeated, and ridiculous responses to an ever-changing world. Simon Green and David Shrubsole cast their gaze over life's rude awakenings. Reteaming after their Drama Desk-nominated Traveling Light, Green and Shrubsole concoct a theatrical marriage of words and music that transports audiences to a former, more innocent incarnation of themselves. Simon Green: So, This Then Is Life begins performances at 59E59 THEATERS (59 East 59th Street, NYC - 212-279-4200) on Tuesday, May 20th for a limited engagement through Sunday, June 1st. Simon's cabarets, with musical director and arranger, David Shrubsole, are familiar in London's major cabaret venues and have played New York at Feinstein's, The Metropolitan Room, Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and the 59E59 TheatersPress opening is Thursday, May 22 at 7:15 pm. The performance schedule is Tuesday through Thursday at 7:15 pm; Friday at 8:15 pm; Saturday at 2:15 & 8:15 pm; and Sunday at 3:15 & 7:15 pm. Tickets are $35 ($24.50 for 59E59 Members)
NYC: HAL LINDEN AT THE CARLYLE
Hal Linden, 83, brings his one-man show, "Hal Linden Live in Concert," to THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600) on Tuesday through Saturday, May 20th through 24th with performances at 8:45 pm. Best known as Barney Miller, the eponymous star of the 1970s sitcom in which he played the down-to-earth captain of a police precinct in Greenwich Village, Linden has appeared in 20 Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. In addition to playing "Sing, Sing, Sing" (made famous by Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa) and other songs on the clarinet, he will croon Broadway hits, including "In My Own Lifetime" from "The Rothschilds," backed by a seven-piece band. There is a $70-$130 cover ($50-$60 at bar) cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
