NEW ENGLAND: PHIL KASSEL AT AMAZING THINGS
Singer Phil Kassel brings his newest show to AMAZING THINGS ARTS CENTER (160 Hollis Street, Framingham, MA - 508-405-2787) on Sunday, May 18th at 7:00 pm. He is joined by Bill Duffy on Piano and Steve Rose on percussion. The show reflects Phil's interest of all kinds of music. He will feature songs from jazz, folk, pop and rock traditions, by Jobim, Mitchell, Wonder, Springsteen and others. A serious student of voice and performance, as well as the author of numerous previous shows, he's appeared at such venues as Jimmy Tingle's, Ryle's, the Amazing Things and Cambridge Multi-Cultural Arts Centers. There is a $10 cover.
TORONTO: SUNDAY NIGHT CABARET: LE TRIO PARISIEN + 1
'Le Trio Parisien' + 1 featuring Juliet Dumm will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, May 18th at 7:00 pm. 'Le Trio Parisien' is comprised of musicians who share a love for French music. Juliet Dunn lived in Paris, France for 13 years (1987 - 2000) so she has a deep connection with the French culture and calls Paris her 2nd home. This connection comes through as she vocalizes to the French classics. She first formed this band (Peter Shea/Robi Botos - piano, Duncan Hopkins - bass, Gerry Dulligal - accordion/saxophone, Robi Botos/Peter Shea - drums) in 2009 and they have just recently finished their first album recording: 'C'est Si Bon'. Gillian Margot will perform in the 3rd floor "Jazz Celler" Lounge of THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, May 18th at 7:00 pm. Gillianis becoming internationally known for her exquisite voice and stunning presence. With an exceptional understanding of her instrument, her authentic sound and refreshing approach to music are causing audiences everywhere to stand up and take notice. A multi-award and grant winner, Margot has studied and worked with some of the finest talents in both jazz and classical musics. For this series, she will be joined by the incomparably gifted guitarist, Kevin Barrett. There is a $10 cover.
WASHINGTON DC: ARTURO SANDOVAL AT BLUES ALLEY
Arturo Sandoval will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Friday through Sunday, May 16th through 18th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Sandovol is fluent in at least four musical languages. He can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and sooth you with a luscious ballad; with equal power and grace. Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Los Angeles home. A protege of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz.
