BOSTON: ANTONEVICH & KATZ DUO AT SCULLERS
The Antonevich & Katz duo perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Tuesday, May 20th at 8:00 pm. The duo delivers a sizzling fusion of American Jazz and European Gypsy music, featuring Jazz favorites arranged for violin and piano in the European Gypsy-Jazz style. Its members, violinist Stanislav Antonevich and pianist Leo Loginov Katz, are professional musicians of Eastern European origin, with superb credentials, unusual backgrounds, and complementary talents. Blues is the root, the foundation - the undercurrent churning beneath nearly all strains of popular music. By tapping into that elusive blues feeling and exploring its potential to inform and enrich a variety of musical settings, Oz Noy has emerged as a compelling new voice in a crowded field. The resulting music is simultaneously refreshingly inventive and grounded in a deep, soulful tradition. TORONTO: THE VINCENT WOLFE TRIO AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
Canadian crooner Vincent Wolfe will bring his trio (Vincent Wolfe - vocals, Peter Hill - piano, Ron Johnston - bass) to THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, May 20th at 7:30 pm. Wolfe has spent the last dozen years carving out a reputation as one of the most original and gifted interpreters of song on the recent jazz/cabaret scene. His captivating warmth and vocal expressiveness have endeared him to audience and critics alike. With three critically acclaimed albums (Trust the Vibe, Until Tomorrow, Weaver of Dreams) and hundreds of club, concert and festival dates under his belt, Vincent has built a reputation as a charismatic performer with a fast-growing fan base. Vincent will perform material from his eclectic jazz-cabaret repertoire, singing tunes from his first three albums and favourite music from the 30's to the 70's. As always, Vincent puts his warm, velvet-voiced spin on a blend of beloved standards and lesser-known gems. There is a $15 cover.
TORONTO: JAZZ BISTRO YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: FELIX WONG
Toronto based jazz pianist Felix Wong returns to THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, May 20th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. Wong began playing the piano at the age of 4. He is a self-taught jazz musician. His many musical influences include Bill Evans, Esperanza Spalding, Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Jaco Pastorius and more. He is a former member of the Toronto All-Star Big Band, where he has performed with the legendary Doc Severinsen and Jackie Richardson. He has travelled with the band, performing venues such as Casa Loma, Old Mill Inn, the Beaches International Jazz Festival and more. He is currently a member of the Jazz FM 91.1 Big Band, where he has had the opportunity to perform with Joey Defrancesco. Felix was chosen to be a part of the 2013 Conn-Selmer Centerstage Jazz Band under the direction of Alex Dean, feautring some of the most outstanding young jazz players in Canada. Recently, he also performed in the TD Young Jazz Showcase in Port Hope, under the direction of Denny Christianson, where he opened for the All-Canadian Legends Renee Rosnes, P.J. Perry, Terry Clarke, and Neil Swainson. here is no cover charge.
WASHINGTON, DC: PROJECT THEM AT BLUES ALLEY
Project THEM, featuring: Bob Francesschini (Sax) & Mark Sherman (Vibes) will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, May 20th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. What a miracle it is when musicians get together on a project and take it to the next level night after night. When it's a reunion of dynamic talents like saxophonist Bob Franceschini and vibraphonist Mark Sherman - students together at the High School of Music and Art in NYC - the music can reach dizzying heights. As young musicians, Sherman and Franceschini aspired to start a band, and Project TH3M has made clear that the wait was worth it. "THEM" brings a deeply rooted post bop approach to a program of originals and standards that convincingly carry on the art form with a potent level of invigorating musicianship.
