NYC: JAY LEONHART DUO AT BIRDLAND

The Jay Leonhart Duo will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, in April at 6:00 pm. Combining the skills of an old school entertainer and virtuoso jazz man, bassist, vocalist and composer Jay Leonhart has been a fixture of the New York scene for over forty years. When Jay was fourteen he started playing the bass in The Pier Five Dixieland Jazz Band in Baltimore and never looked back. After studying at The Peabody Institute, Jay attended The Berklee School of Music and The Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto, before leaving school to start touring with the traveling big bands of the late 50's and early 60's. Upon moving to New York, Jay eventually began playing for many of the great jazz musicians, big bands, and singers who were to be found in New York - artists like Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Tony Bennett, Marian McPartland, and Jim Hall. Jay became a very busy studio musician in New York City, visiting every musical genre from James Taylor to Ozzy Osbourne and Queen Latifah. Between 1975 and 1995 he was named The Most Valuable Bassist in the recording industry three times by the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences. Jay has now recorded 15 solo albums. His first one-man show "The Bass Lesson" is being received warmly by critics and audiences. Jay's next show "Nukular Tulips" is in the works. There is a $30 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: PAT MARTINO ORGAN TRIO AT BIRDLAND

The Pat Martino Organ Trio with Pat Bianchi (organ) Carmen Intorre Jr. (drums) will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, April 15th through 19th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. One of the greatest guitarists in jazz, Martino got his start on the "chitlin' circuit" in the 1960s with organ groups led by Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Trudy Pitts and Charles Earland. Having made a full and remarkable recovery from a life-threatening illness in the 1980's that caused him to forget how to play the guitar, Martino relearned by listening to his own early recordings and has re-emerged as a veteran presence on the jazz scene. Today Martino lives in his native Philadelphia and his playing is as fiery and technically brilliant as ever. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: PLAYING FOR JIM HALL AT THE BLUE NOTE

"Playing For Jim Hall", An Official Memorial Tribute Celebrating The Life & Music Of Jim Hall will be held atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, April 18th through 20th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Mr. Hall passed away in December 2013, and in keeping with Jim's quiet and unassuming nature, his sendoff was attended only by the immediate family. The multitude of condolences and shared stories attest to the fact that Jim was not only an inspiring musician but also a man with a huge heart. Sadly, his heart has stopped beating but his music endures and the treasured memories live on in all of us. Playing For Jim Hall will feature Bill Frisell, guitar; Julian Lage, guitar; Greg Osby, sax; Kate Schutt, guitar & vocals; Scott Colley, bass; and Joey Baron, drums. Not only was Jim Hall one of the jazz world's favorite guitarists, but he also earned critical acclaim for his skills as a composer and arranger. The first formal recognition came in 1997 when Jim won the New York Jazz Critics Circle Award for Best Jazz Composer/Arranger. In 2004, he joined the Baltimore Symphony to debuted his concerto for guitar and orchestra, commissioned by Towson University in Maryland for The First World Guitar Congress. The title of the work, "Peace Movement," is indicative of Jim's desire to contribute to world peace through his music. In January of 2006, the French Minister of Culture and Communication knighted him. There is a $20-$35 cover.
