NYC: KARL SAINT LUCY AT 54 BELOW
Karl Saint Lucy, Brooklyn-based composer and singer-songwriter, will present his solo debut, Karl Saint Lucy: Easier Said Than Done, on April 14th at 11:30 pm at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551). Songs young and old will be sung, all in Saint Lucy's eclectic high-art meets campy-trash idiom. Born in St. Louis and raised all over the heartland of the United States, Karl Saint Lucy is a songwriter whose influences are as varied as his experiences. He was conceived the moment Joni Mitchell shared "Free Man in Paris" with David Geffen, and he lost his innocence the moment Rufus Wainwright shared "Dinner at Eight" with his father, Loudon. Saint Lucy found his way into songwriting by way of musical theatre; he studied musical theatre composition with Michael John LaChiusa, William Finn, Polly Pen, and other great New York theatre composers through the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at Tisch. What comes out in the work of Karl Saint Lucy is a synthesis of people and places that reveals not only love-hate relationships with genre, approach, and his country of origin; but also a fierce determination to redeem those relationships to better inform the present. He also really loves torch songs. There is a $5 cover cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ASHLEY MONROE: STRIKING MATCHES
Ashley Monroe and Striking Matches will take the stage at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Monday, April 14th with performances at 7:00 & 9:30 pm. Most folks, as soon as they hear Ashley Monroe, instantly recognize one thing: she's the real deal. Her songs resonate so profoundly because they reflect the experiences of an artist who, although she is just 26, has already seen both the best and worst that life has to offer. Simply stated, Striking Matches, made up of Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis, came to Nashville to play music. Sarah, a Philadelphia native and Justin, from Atlanta, met when a professor at Belmont University paired them at random to play for a classroom full of guitar majors. The pair has been writing and performing ever since. Their influences range from Jerry Reed to the Beatles, John Mayer to Patsy Cline, and back again. It becomes more obvious every day that they were born to play music together. In December 2012, Striking Matches made their debut on the Grand Ole Opry where they have subsequently played more than fifteen times. The duo has had three songs featured on ABC's hit show "Nashville." Striking Matches has shared the stage with John Hiatt, Hunter Hayes, Martina McBride, The Band Perry, The Fray, Billy Currington, Kip Moore, Ashley Monroe and many more. There os a $30 cover.
