NYC: THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND

The Louis Armstrong Centennial Band aka David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/ vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more! There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: REGINA CARTER'S "SOUTHERN COMFORT" CD RELEASE

Regina Carter will celebrate her "Southern Comfort" CD Release at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, April 1st through 5th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. As the most recent in a long line of important and eclectic Jazz artists from Detroit (including Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Barry Harris, cousin James Carter and others) Carter continues her musical journey through history with her Sony Music Master Works Debut, "Southern Comfort," in which she investigates her family history and explores the folk tunes her paternal grandfather, a coalminer, would have heard as he toiled in Alabama. The expanded project includes a blend of folk songs and spirituals, serving as Carter's interpretation of her roots through modern jazz.There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ROY HARGROVE AT THE BLUE NOTE

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, April 1st through 6th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. At 36, Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. Ever-stretching into more challenging and colorful ways to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has left indelible imprints in a vast array of artful settings. During his tenure on the Verve label alone, he has recorded an album with a hand-picked collection of the world's greatest tenor saxophonists (With the Tenors of Our Time), an album of standards with strings (Moment to Moment) and, in 2003, introduced his own hip hop/jazz collective The RH Factor with the groundbreaking CD Hard Groove (swiftly followed by the limited edition EP, Strength). Hargrove has also won Grammy• Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roy's Cuban-based band Crisol (including piano legend Jesus "Chucho" Valdes and wonder drummer Horatio "El Negro" Hernandez) won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration Directions in Music. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: JUILLIARD JAZZ ENSEMBLE AT DIZZY'S

Juilliard Jazz Ensemble will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday, April 2nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since its founding, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy at Dizzy's. The Juilliard Jazz Ensemble features some of the world's most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians. No stranger to Dizzy's Club, the ensemble has also performed at noted venues such as Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz's bright future.
