TORONTO: DON FRANCKS: SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE JAZZ CELLAR

THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) is excited to present legendary vocalist Don Francks as part of a new series taking place Sunday evenings in March at 8:00 pm in the Jazz Cellar, their beautiful 3rd floor lounge. He is joined by Steve Hunter on keys. When Don Francks opens his mouth to sing, he takes his audience on a journey. This celebrated singer and actor is widely regarded as one of the finest and most authentic jazz voices in Canada, having released several recordings including "Jackie Gleason Says: No One in This World is Like Don Francks" (with guitar legend Lenny Breau) , "Lost and Alone" (featuring orchestra arrangements by conductor Patrick Williams) and the original motion-picture soundtrack to Finian's Rainbow; among others. Francks has starred in many CBC television specials with jazz compatriots Jimmy Dale, Guido Basso, pianist Maury Kaye and the late, great Ron Collier. Then, in the sixties he moved to New York City where he performed on The Jackie Gleason Show, sang at The Blue Angel, and recorded a live album at the Village Vanguard. He also made several appearances on the Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Dick Cavett and Merv Griffin shows. Next stop: Hollywood, where he guest-starred in shows like The Wild Wild West, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mannix, and Mission: Impossible. "La Femme Nikita", "The Listener", "My Bloody Valentine" and "I'm Not There". His list of work as a voice-over artist for ads and cartoons is simply too vast to even begin mentioning! At 82 years young, Francks has just released "21st Century Francks," a live recording captured in 2002 at The Top O' the Senator. He will be performing songs from the CD, with many surprises in store along the way. There is a $5 cover.

D.C.: STANLEY JORDAN AT BLUES ALLEY

Stanley Jordan will perform atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, March 27th through 30th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. One way to attack the daunting task of describing Stanley Jordan is to think of him as a world class guitarist who marches in all aspects of his life to the beat of his own drummer. Never one to be locked into constraints when it comes to musical expression, genres or applications, the Palo Alto, California-born prodigy is a progressive thinker with goals and ideals that stretch far beyond record deals, fortune or fame. Besides being a technical innovator on the guitar whose "touch" or "tapping" technique allows him to sound like two or three guitarists at the same time with no overdubs or other studio techniques, Stanley Jordan also plays music with an uncommon depth of feeling. Call for cover/minimum information.

MARYLAND: RALPH STANLEY & THE CLINCH MOUNTAIN BOYS

Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Saturday & Sunday, March 29th & 30th at 8:00 pm. Now 86 years old, Stanley has been performing professionally since he and his older brother, Carter, formed a band in their native southwestern Virginia in 1946. Between that date and 1966, when Carter died, the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys became one of the most celebrated bluegrass groups in the world, rivaling in popularity such titans as Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs. Ralph Stanley's voice is not of this century. Nor of the last one, for that matter. Its stark emotional urgency is rooted in a darker time, when pain was the common coin of life and the world offered sinful humanity no hope of refuge. Preserved in the cultural amber of remote Appalachia, this terse, forlorn sound is the bedrock of Stanley's inimitable style. But don't mistake an ancient voice for ancient ways. Stanley tours and performs with the vigor and elan of a rock star. There is a $30 cover.
