TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: FELIX WONG
Toronto based jazz pianist Felix Wong will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, March 25th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. Wong began playing the piano at the age of 4. He is a self-taught jazz musician. His many musical influences include Bill Evans, Esperanza Spalding, Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Jaco Pastorius and more. He is a former member of the Toronto All-Star Big Band, where he has performed with the legendary Doc Severinsen and Jackie Richardson. He has travelled with the band, performing venues such as Casa Loma, Old Mill Inn, the Beaches International Jazz Festival and more. He is currently a member of the Jazz FM 91.1 Big Band, where he has had the opportunity to perform with Joey Defrancesco. Felix was chosen to be a part of the 2013 Conn-Selmer Centerstage Jazz Band under the direction of Alex Dean, feautring some of the most outstanding young jazz players in Canada. Recently, he also performed in the TD Young Jazz Showcase in Port Hope, under the direction of Denny Christianson, where he opened for the All-Canadian Legends Renee Rosnes, P.J. Perry, Terry Clarke, and Neil Swainson. There is no cover charge.
TORONTO: ANDREA SUPERSTEIN AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
Galaxie award nominee, Andrea Superstein will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday night, March 25th at 8:00 pm. Superstein can best be described as: Quirky. Indie. Jazz. Born and raised in Montreal and now residing in Vancouver, she is heavily influenced by the rich tradition of the East and the thriving indie scene of the West. She masterfully blends elements of traditional jazz combined with a contemporary feel and electronic bits, making for a unique musical experience. Superstein creates music with nostalgic undertones, yet still compellingly new, all the while reeling us in with her charming stories and witty banter. This digital release will showcase some of Superstein's new FACTOR funded work which is slated for a full release in late spring. Joining her will be Juno-winning producer Les Cooper (guitar), Robbie Grunwald (piano/accordion), Mark McIntyre (bass) and Adam Warner (drums). There is a $15 cover.
D.C.: MISS JESSICA AT BLUES ALLEY
DC-based performing artist MissJessica will be appearing at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, March 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. She is a dancer/cultural educator with Lesole's Dance Project, a traditional and contemporary Southern African/modern-infused company. MissJessica is honored to have worked with visual artists Nick Cave and Elsabe Dixon, visionaries Patricia and William Parker, and to have received training with the Urban Bush Women's SLI. Recently, she was included on Steve Marco's RastaRockOpera project alongside such luminaries as Cindy Blackman Santana, Buster Williams, Karen Briggs, Cheikh NDoye, and Elijah Jamal Balbed. She has her BA in Dance from UMCP and completed all MPH coursework in Exercise Science with a focus on Nutrition/Eating Behavior from GWU. Call for cover/minimum information.
D.C.: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: THAD WILSON QUINTET
The Thad Wilson Quintet will take over as "Artist in Residence" atBOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) every Tuesday night with performances at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. One need not dig too deep into our areas jazz scene before coming across the name Thad Wilson. Since coming to D.C. in 1997, Wilson has become a mainstay in the jazz clubs of U Street and beyond by consistently performing with passion, intensity, and consummate artistry in a variety of settings. In addition to his own considerable abilities, his groups feature some of the finest players in the D.C. area. His worldwide appearances include Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia; Paris, France; Antigua, Guatemala; Puebla and Mexico City, Mexico; the D.C. Jazz Festival; Atlanta Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival and many other cities around the world. In 2003, Thad performed his original suite, Reflections on Romare, at the National Gallery of Art's Romare Bearden exhibition opening in 2005. In 2006 and 2007, he served as Program Director for The National Gallery of Art's Jazz in the Garden summer concert series.In 2008, Thad went on the road with the musical production, Ella, which chronicled the life and times of Ella Fitzgerald. He played the role of Donnie and was featured in the play performing a musical impression of Louis Armstrong. Currently, in addition to composing and touring, Thad teaches Jazz Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. There is a $15 cover.
