NYC: THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND
The Louis Armstrong Centennial Band aka David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band performs at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/ vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more! Violinist Regina Carter will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, October 1st through 5th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. As the most recent in a long line of important and eclectic Jazz artists from Detroit (including Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Barry Harris, cousin James Carter and others) Regina Carter is as likely to explore that city's rich musical history through the music of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as she is through Tin Pan Alley and Classical music where she first garnered attention as a member of the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra. NYC: THE LOU DONALDSON QUARTET AT THE BLUE NOTE
Lou Donaldson will be performing at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Thursday, October 1st through 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. He appears with his world class Quartet (Lou Donaldson, alto sax; Akiko Tsuruga, Hammond B3 organ; Randy Johnston, guitar; Fukushi Tainaka, drums) with whom he has been touring the world playing Festivals and club for the past two decades. Named as a NEA JAZZ MASTER in 2013, Lou Donaldson has been termed a truly unique and absolutely indispensable creative voice in modern jazz. Lou Donaldson played an absolutely invaluable role in the creation and building of the classic Blue Note Record Label, and the assembly and musical development of the the classic Jazz Messengers bands that originally featured Lou Donaldson, Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Gene Ramey, Hank Mobley, and many other of the greatest creative virtuosos of the this entire era of modern jazz expression. NYC: ANDY TIMMONS BAND PLAYS SGT. PEPPER & OTHER ROCK CLASSICS
The Andy Timmons Band plays Sgt. Pepper & Other Rock Classics atIRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Wednesday, October 2nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. As guitarist for pop-metal band Danger Danger, he toured the world opening for Kiss and Alice Cooper, sold over a million records worldwide, and had two #1 videos on MTV, plus amassing a discography that includes 7 solo releases that range from blazing guitar instrumentals, to blues, and even a Beatles/Elvis Costello-inspired collection of pop tunes. As a session player, he's been highly featured on CDs by drumming legend Simon Phillips, a live CD with Olivia Newton-John (Andy has been her music director/guitarist for several U.S. tours), two internationally acclaimed CDs by Kip Winger, recording sessions for Paula Abdul, Paul Stanley, and countless radio and television jingles. He has also played alongside many of his heroes such as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (as a regular guest on their G3 tours in Dallas), Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Mike Stern, Ace Frehley, Ted Nugent, and Pierre Bensusan, as well as some of his fave '60s singing stars such as the Beach Boys, Lesley Gore, and Gordon Waller (of Peter and Gordon fame!). NYC: FREDDIE REDD: SHADES OF REDD AT DIZZY'S
The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music presents Freddie Redd in Shades of Redd at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday, October 2nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. An original and distinctive pioneer of hard bop, Freddie Redd's legacy as a composer, arranger, and pianist comes primarily from three essential Blue Note Recordings he led in 1960-61. For this performance at Dizzy's, the 85-year-old veteran Redd revisits Shades of Redd, a 1960 recording featuring Jackie McLean, Tina Brooks, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes. This time, he takes on the combined role of leader and mentor, joined by outstanding contemporaries Brad Linde and Stacy Dillard, along with New School jazz students Uri Zelig and Alex Claffy. A leading example of hard bop composition and small group arrangement, Shades of Redd remains as effective today as it was when it first blew people away over 50 years ago. There is a $30 cover.
