NYC: KAT GANG AT BIRDLAND

Jazz vocalist Kat Gang will appear at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) for one night only on Thursday, September 18th at 6:00 pm. Kat has a soul steeped in jazz. Born in Boston, she began her music theory training as a teenager at Berklee and then fell in love with the energy of New York City and went on to gain her BFA from NYU. Kat continued her music studies at the Royal Academy in London, where she lived and worked singing jazz all over England for seven years. She has performed twice at the GRAMMY Awards with the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, traded fours with Bobby McFerrin at the Blue Note Jazz Festival, and played all the major jazz venues in New York City including Birdland, The Iridium, 54 Below and others. She currently performs a weekly residency at the Plaza Hotel with her quartet. Her most recent release on Arbors Records features Bucky Pizzarelli and Mike Renzi, and has been at the top of the jazz charts for three consecutive weeks. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: COLTRANE REVISITED AT BIRDLAND

Coltrane Revisited, a tribute to the Jazz legend John Coltrane, will be presented atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, September 16th through 20th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. John William Coltrane, also known as "Trane", was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and was later at the forefront of free jazz. He organized at least fifty recording sessions as a leader during his career, and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, notably with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Performing on Tuesday & Wednesday, the 16th & 17th, will be Joe Lovano (sax), Ben Allison, Lonnie Plaxico (bass), Matt Wilson and Andrew Cyrille (drums). Thursday through Saturday, the 18th through 20th: Joe Lovano (sax) ,Mike Mainieri (vibes), Lonnie Plaxico (bass), Steve Smith (drums). There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: TALIB KWELI LIVE WITH BAND AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli will perform atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday & Friday, September 18th & 19th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Kweli earned his stripes as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and politically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years. His travels around the globe as one of rap's most in-demand performers combined with his conversations with political activists and his genre-straddling work with Idle Warship and others caused Kweli to realize that he was limited in a sense, a prisoner of sorts of his own success as one of the world's best rappers with something significant to say. There is a $20-$30 cover.

NYC: MONTY ALEXANDER: JAZZ AROUND THE WEST INDIES

Monty Alexander will present 'Jazz Around the West Indies' at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday through Sunday, September 17th through 21st with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare. Tonight, Alexander and his award-winning group will keep the club moving for Jazz Around the West Indies, a unique showcase of genre- and culture-blending music. Call for cover/minimum information.
