NYC: JANE MONHEIT'S JAZZ PARTY AT BIRDLAND

Jane Monheit's Jazz Party, with Michael Kanan, Neal Miner, Rick Montalbano will be held at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays, at 6:00 pm. In just over fifteen years, critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Jane Monheit's honey-smooth vocals, silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned her two Grammy nominations and established her as one of her generation's most beloved and accomplished vocalists. Jane's sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds. Jane will debut her forthcoming project, "Hello Bluebird: Celebrating the Jazz of Judy Garland," in NYC during a weeklong engagement in January 2015. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: LIVE ALBUM RECORDING AT THE BLUE NOTE

Odean Pope on Sax, Pharoah Sanders on Sax, James Carter on Sax, Reggie Workman on Bass, Geri Allen on Piano, and Jeff 'Tain' Watts on Drums come together for a live album recording at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, September 9th through 14th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. This special six-night run will be recorded live each night, and later released as an album on Half Note Records. A fiery and often intense tenor saxophonist, Odean Pope was an important member of Max Roach's quartet beginning in 1979. Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones. One of the most admired saxophonists of his generation and a powerful force in today's jazz scene, James Carter's playing is firmly rooted in 20th-century African American culture. There is a $25-$35 cover.

NYC: ROY HAYNES FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH BAND AT DIZZY'S

Roy Haynes, legendary jazz drummer and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award winner, brings his GRAMMY-nominated "Fountain of Youth" band toDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday through Sunday, September 11th through 14th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Since becoming a professional musician in the 1940s, Haynes has worked with artists such as Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Pat Metheny. Join us at the club to witness an incomparable artist alongside a hand-picked group of master musicians in the making. The event is part of the fifth annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival. There is a $40 cover.
