NYC: MARY FOSTER CONKLIN FRIDAYS AT A MOSCOW 57
Jazz/ cabaret vocalist Mary Foster Conklin performs on Friday nights at MOSCOW57 ON DELANCEY (168 1/2 Delancey Street, NYC - 212-260-5775) at 8:00 pm. The club celebrated its one year anniversary on the corner where Loisaida meets the Williamsburg Bridge. Owned by Ellen Kaye, singer/ pioneer/ force of nature, who nightly hosts the best party in town with a rotating group of artistsecalls it Hobohemia - A Rendezvous of Strangers. Mary sings a short set every Friday, with Ethan Fein on guitar and Benjamin Franklin Brown on bass. Conklin has appeared in theatres, jazz clubs, cabarets and even fire escapes in the metropolitan New York area and throughout the United States and Canada. A New Jersey native who came to New York to pursue theatre work, her transformation from actor to jazz singer began when she joined drummer/composer Art Lillard's 15-piece Heavenly Band and her song selections naturally shifted from show tunes to blues, Latin and bebop. As a leader, her sets are a mix of contemporary material and standards, with an emphasis on the lesser known treasures of the Great American Songbook. In New York, Conklin's talents have earned her a place on the stages of The Blue Note, Zinc Bar, Iridium, Birdland, Jazz at the Kitano, the Metropolitan Room and the Triad Theatre. She can also be seen from time to time singing off various fire escapes as The Lady in the Red Dress with the Renegade Cabaret. Her recent project, LIFE IS A BITCH - a tribute to poet/lyricist Fran Landesman, (best known for "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men") has been praised by audiences and critics aloke. On the West Coast she has performed in Los Angeles at the In House Jazz Series, Vitello's, the Gardenia and the Jazz Bakery. She has appeared in Chicago at the Cultural Center and in Palm Beach, Florida at the Royal Room. Ms. Conklin was awarded the 2010 MAC Award for Jazz Vocalist by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets - http://www.macnyc.com/ ). Her debut CD, Crazy Eyes, won the 1999 Bistro Award presented by Backstage Magazine for Outstanding Recording. Her second recording, You'd Be Paradise, was released in September 2001 to critical acclaim, worldwide airplay and was a jazz bestseller for two years on www.CDBaby.com. Several years ago, what began as a simple quest for some lesser known Matt Dennis material (she recorded "Everything Happens to Me" on her second CD) quickly became an all-out obsession. She began her search at the Library of Congress, then teamed up with Los Angeles singer/songwriter Mark Winkler to present a bi-coastal tribute to the music of Matt Dennis and Bobby Troup. Her recording, Blues For Breakfast - Remembering Matt Dennis (Rhombus Records) is a collection of songs by the late Matt Dennis, best known for his hits "Angel Eyes" and "Violets for your Furs". NYC: BARB JUNGR: HARD RAIN: THE SONGS OF BOB DYLAN AND LEONARD COHEN
Acclaimed as "One of the best interpreters of Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan anywhere", Barb Jungr returns to the songs of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen with the release of Hard Rain this July to JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) with performances on Thursdays & Fridays, July 9th & 10th and 16th & 17th - all shows at 7:00 pm. Over the past few years the British chanteuse has been wowing critics and audiences alike at home and abroad with her insightful, intelligent interpretations of well-loved songs combined with her powerful and often witty performance style. Her earlier Dylan collection, 'Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan: Every Grain of Sand' (Linn Records 2002), is now regarded as a cult classic album. There is a $25 cover. NYC: BRIDGET EVERETT'S ROCK BOTTOM AT JOE'S PUB
Originally commissioned as part of The Joe's Pub 2013 New York Voices series, "Rock Bottom" became a downtown hit when it opened to critical acclaim in September, 2014, and was extended until its limited engagement ended on October 16th. Now, due to popular demand and its recent sold-out run, Bridget Everett returns for a limited engagement at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE(425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Tuesday & Wednesday, July 7th & 8th and Friday & Saturday, July 10th & 11th - all shows at 9:30 pm. "Rock Bottom" is what happens when you are too passionate to give up, and too big to fail. The ferociously talented Bridget Everett wrote the show, a chardonnay-soaked journey through the highs and lows of her life, with the Tony Award-winning songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Longtime collaborators and friends Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Matt Ray contributed music as well. In it, Everett shares intensely personal moments next to wildly hilarious ones, baring her heart and much more to her audiences. You will be transported to a New World, as a troupe of fabulous drag queens takes you on a twisted - and very adult - journey, catapulting you back to your childhood into a Magical Kingdom where dreams come true. This ever-evolving 75-minute non-stop extravaganza features high-energy dance numbers, comedy, dazzling costumes and lip-syncing "ladies" - with a bit of Cher, Patti LuPone, Idina Menzel and Rihanna thrown in for good measure! NYC: RICHARD MALAVET - VERY GOOD YEARS: THE INTIMATE SINATRA
Returning to Manhattan cabaret after a brief hiatus, Richard Malavet brings his brand new show, Very Good Years: The Intimate Sinatra to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Friday, July 10th at 7:00 pm. Multi-Grammy nominee John di Martino will be musical director/arranger and pianist leading the band. This is the year of Frank Sinatra's centennial. He remains the iconic pop singer whom musical historians and critics' consider the definitive pop vocalist of the last 100 years. In a crowded field, he stands alone as the male singer by whom singers of the Great American Songbook are compared. Throughout his career, Sinatra considered himself a saloon singer. This special retrospective is a chronology of select recorded songs including "This Love Of Mine," and "I'm A Fool To Want You," (two songs he co-wrote), also "Night And Day" and his personal favorite, "Put Your Dreams Away." It also includes the many songs he recorded with his favorite arranger Nelson Riddle. The set will focus on the years 1939 through 1968. It will also feature lesser known gems such as "Once I Loved," "Say It (Over And Over Again") and "The Same Hello, The Same Goodbye," (written for Frank by Alan & Marilyn Bergman, but never recorded.) There will also be respectful nods to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Duke Ellington both of whom Sinatra collaborated with in the 1960s. Several arrangements are given a decided Latin twist. Richard Malavet has been acclaimed for his work as a singer of the classic American and Spanish songbooks. He has performed with his band in many Manhattan clubs. A native New Yorker, Mr. Malavet has brought his highly acclaimed Billy Eckstine tribute, "The Billy Eckstine Project: Songs in the Key of 'B," to venues across the country.
NYC: ENDORPHIN ANNIE PRESENTS "ORANGE IN AN APPLE TREE"
Annie Calder and her entire Endorphin Annie band will appear at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM(34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) for a refreshing, upbeat night of music, celebrating her latest album release, Orange In An Apple Tree. NYC-based, indie folk/ alternative band Endorphin Annie includes lead singer and songwriter Annie Calder, Ryan Thompson on lead guitar, Bruce Gordon on bass, Safrah Levitan on keys, and Tom Curiano on percussion. Endorphin Annie's honestly simple, infectious songs never fail to elicit a soulful, euphoric response in their audience. Award-winning songwriter Annie Calder is known for her soft, soothing voice, reminiscent of famous folk singers of the 60's, as well as for lyrics that are clever, deeply personal, and endearingly funny. Calder's influences include classic 60's folk/rock, early alternative artists The Cure and Regina Spektor, and a deep-rooted love of Celtic music, not to mention a So-Cal upbringing as a classical pianist. Jazz pianist Angelo Hart performs at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM(34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Friday, July 10th at 11:00 pm. Hart has always had a unique and expressive approach to his instrument. Angelo has spent personal time studying jazz and classical legends such as Thelonius Monk, Art Tatum, Cecil Taylor, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea, Debussy, Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven and many more. Time spent with the great educators and musicians in Chicago, along with his natural innovative musicianship has molded him into the great musician that he is today. He approaches the piano with command and finesse, displaying a unique relationship and connection between the two of them. Angelo's most recent musical endeavors have immersed him in the vastness of improvisation and compositional freedom. Whether he is pushing the boundaries, breaking through, or carefully treading within the lines, Angelo's music is sure to take you on a musical journey! NYC: MICKY DOLENZ FROM THE MONKEES AT 54 BELOW
Micky Dolenz, best known as the lead singer of the hugely successful rock 'n' roll band, The Monkees, will bring his show "A Little Bit Broadway, A Little Bit Rock 'n' Roll", to 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesday, July 7th at 7:00 pm, with additional performances scheduled for Friday & Saturday, July 10th & 11th at 7:00 pm. The band originated from the classic sixties TV show of the same name. The Monkees sold over 65 million records and has toured the U.S. (and much of the world) many times over. Micky has also starred in musicals on Broadway, The West End, and in national tours including Disney's AIDA (Broadway), Pippin, Hairspray (West End), Grease, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Tom Sawyer, and more. Micky has recorded two solo albums (Remember and King For A Day) and recently appeared in the world premiere of the new play Comedy Is Hard (Ivoryton Playhouse) by four-time Emmy winner Mike Reiss (The Simpsons). "A Little Bit Broadway, A Little Bit Rock 'n' Roll" is a brand new show Micky has created to combine his love of Broadway with his love for rock 'n' roll in one thrilling new intimate concert. NYC: SPUN: A ROCK MUSICAL BY JEREMY SCHONFELD IN CONCERT
For one night only, on Friday, July 10th at 9:30 pm, celebrated singer/songwriter, composer/lyricist Jeremy Schonfeld (Clear Blue Tuesday, Drift), and the cast of his new show, Spun (book by Emily Goodson) will perform in concert at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551). The evening will feature selections from the new hit show that has played to sold-out crowds on its path to the Adirondack Theater Festival, July 23rd through August 1st, before its next stop: New York City. Set in the crumbling economic landscape of America's Rust Belt, Spun is a high-octane, blue-collar musical exploring the complexities and hardships of the down-on their-luck American family struggling to find that elusive American Dream. This NYMF special concert presentation stars Spun newcomer Max Sangerman (Blue Man Group, The 12) as Jesse and Brook Wood (Holland America cruises - principal vocalist) as Molly - a role she originated, as well as others to be announced. NYC: OLIVIA POLCI - LATE NIGHT AT 54 BELOW
Olivia Polci makes her debut solo performance at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Friday, July 10th at 11:30 pm as part of the club's Late Night Series. Raised in New Jersey, Polci is no stranger to the stage. As a recent graduate of Montclair State University, she is ready to tear up New York City belting one song to the next from classic show tunes to pop/rock. Recently, Olivia appeared at The Bergen PAC with her father's band "THE HIT MEN" and in several concerts at 54 Below. You can hear her on the concept album of the new musical Wendy's Shadow. Featuring Evan Ruggiero (The Ellen Show, American Idol, One-Legged Song and Dance Man) and David Maglione (Hands On A Hard Body, Wendy's Shadow).
