NYC: NANCY KELLY CD RELEASE PARTY AT BIRDLAND

Nancy Kelly will hold a CD Release Party at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday, September 4th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by Dino Losito - Organ, Carmen Intorre - Drums, Jerry Weldon - Tenor Sax and Ed Cherry - Guitar. Starting at age four in her hometown of Rochester, New York, Nancy studied piano, clarinet, drama and dance with private instructors, and voice at the Eastman School of Music. During her thirty plus year career she has honed her trademark swing/bop take no prisoner's back to the roots swinging style in front of audiences across the U.S. and abroad from Singapore to Switzerland, France, and Turkey to her 3 tours of Japan. Nancy appears regularly in New York City including performances at The Blue Note, Birdland and The Rainbow Room and Dizzy's Jazz club, Lincoln Center. She works frequently in Los Angeles and Miami, as well as countless jazz clubs, festivals, and symphony orchestra engagements across the country. Nancy was twice named "Best Female Jazz Vocalist" in the Down Beat Readers' Poll. She has recorded four critically acclaimed CDs, Her first cd "Live Jazz" reached #11 on the Billboard charts. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: RALPH ALESSI BAIDA QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

The Ralph Alessi Baida Quartet with Ralph Alessi Baida (trumpet), Jason Moran (piano), Drew Gress (bass), and Nasheet Waits (drums) will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, September 2nd through 6th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Born in San Francisco, the son of classical trumpeter Joe Alessi and opera singer Maria Leone, Alessi studied under the legendary Charlie Haden at CalArts before moving to NYC where he became an ubiquitous presence on the downtown scene. A frequent collaborator with such notables as Steve Coleman, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane and Fred Hersch, Alessi has also recorded seven albums as a leader including the critically acclaimed "Baida" (Quartet) on ECM Records. As an educator, Alessi has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and is currently the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music. Since 2002, he has been on the jazz faculty at New York University. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BILLY COBHAM SPECTRUM 40 AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Billy Cobham Spectrum 40, with Billy Cobham - Drums, Dean Brown - Guitar, Gary Husband - Keyboards, and Ric Fierabracci - Bass will perform atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, September 2nd through 7th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Ever since his breakthrough in the early 1970s as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and as a drummer/leader whose recordings (such as Spectrum) and powerful, complex style of play exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion-Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musical explorer. In 2014, Cobham will release a live CD recording from last years' celebrated Spectrum 40 tours, which dazzled audiences around the world in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Spectrum CD, the defining album of the jazz-fusion genre. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: BRIA SKONBERG & HER JAZZ COMPATRIOTS: SATCH PLAYS FATS

Bria Skonberg & Her Jazz Compatriots (Bria Skonberg, trumpet; Evan Arntzen, bass; Dalton Ridenhour, piano; and Joe Saylor, drums) present Satch Plays Fats at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday, September 4th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The show is part of the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival. Bria Skonberg has earned acclaim as a singer, trumpeter, songwriter, and bandleader, and in 2013 was recognized as a Rising Star in critics' polls by DownBeat and the Jazz Journalists Association. With a style that combines old-school hot jazz with soul, eclectic world percussion, and pop songwriting, Skonberg's original work has attracted world-class players as sidemen, including Victor Goines, Wycliffe Gordon, John Pizzarelli, and Ulysses Owens. Tonight, she returns to her roots and performs material from Satch Plays Fats, Louis Armstrong's 1955 tribute to Fats Waller. Call for cover/minimum information.
