Scott is a natural. Only 29, the trumpeter has both the tone and the conviction of the great players of his instrument. He eschews cliche and gimmickry in favor of an expressive sensibility and a willingness to break rules when it makes musical sense to him. A New Orleans native, Scott represents the next generation of Crescent City horn blowers whose lineage started with the legendary King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and has continued with such marquee trumpeters as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton. BETHESDA, MD: THE NIGHTHAWKS PLUS KELLY BELL BAND
The Nighthawks plus Kelly Bell Band perform atBETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Friday, September 5th at 8:00 pm. Voted the Best Blues Band in the Mid Atlantic Region 12 years in a row, the Kelly Bell Band from Baltimore, Maryland combines elements of hip-hop, funk, and blues-electrified here, Delta there, horn driven elsewhere. The Nighthawks had its genesis when lead singer-harmonica player extraordinaire Mark Wenner returned to his native Washington, D.C., after six years in New York City, lured back by the success of his friend Bobby Radcliff's local acclaim with a blues band. Mark joined forces with a very young Jimmy Thackery and formed The Nighthawks in 1972. In 1974, they decided to get the best rhythm section the area had to offer: Jan Zukowski on bass and Pete Ragusa on drums. The Nighthawks set off on a tour that took them to 49 states and a dozen countries. They played with nearly all the living blues legends as well as a new generation of bands sometimes called "the Blue Wave," and released several important albums, including the best-selling Jacks and Kings with Pinetop Perkins, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, Calvin Jones and Bob Margolin. There is a $20 cover - dance floor available.
