BOSTON: NOE SOCHA GROUP AT THE REGATTABAR
Medici Musica Productions presents the Noe Socha Group with special guest David Maxwell at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Thursday, March 20th at 7:30 pm. Noe Socha is from Carpi, Italy. He began playing the guitar at age 12, influenced by artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young. While studying music at Musicology, he discovered the blues and immediately fell in love and began listening to all the blues he could find. His favorite blues artists include Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Lightening Hopkins. After attending a Berklee in Italy program at the Umbria Jazz festival in 2008, Noe was awarded a full scholarship to attend the summer performance program at Berklee School of Music (Boston MA) in 2009. While in the U.S. for a mere 10 weeks that summer, Noe performed at a variety of venues, receiving an enthusiastic response and establishing an international fan base from every audience. In September of 2010, Noe returned to the United States to begin attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. There is a $16 cover.
BOSTON: RONI BEN-HUR SEXTET AT SCULLERS
The Roni Ben-Hur Sextet with special guests George Cables on piano and Victor Lewis on drums, performs atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Thursday, March 20th at 8:00 pm. Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. Ben-Hur - born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, now based in New Jersey - has released nine albums as leader or co-leader. Dinner/Show: $70 Show only: $30.
TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: SANDOR SCHWISBERG
THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) presents Sandor Schwisberg on Wednesday, March 20th at 6:00 pm as part of its Young Artist Series. Sandor Schwisberg is a 19 year-old pianist and composer from Richmond Hill, Ontario. He first took up the piano at the age of 6, studying classical music through the Royal Conservatory. Since then he has performed all over Ontario in a variety of musical settings, including jazz groups, pit orchestras, R&B, alternative rock, and heavy metal bands. Sandor is a graduate of Unionville high school's Arts York music program, where he had many opportunities to perform solo and in collaboration with other musicians, visual artists, actors and dancers. Over the years, he has had the privilege of studying with some of Canada's finest pianists, including Ruben Vazquez, Nancy Walker, Cameron Chu, Brian Dickinson, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duren. Sandor is currently enrolled in his second year of the Humber College Bachelor of Contemporary Music program. No cover charge.
TORONTO: AMY MCCONNELL & WILLIAM SPERANDEI AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
Amy McConnell and William Sperandei will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, March 20th through 22nd at 9:00 p. The pair received a 2014 JUNO Award nomination in the Vocal Jazz Album of the Year category for their debut album"Stealing Genuis". Last year was a big year for McConnell and Sperandei. The pair reached the top of the Jazz charts across Canada, as well as received rave reviews in the Toronto Star, The Globe & Mail and The Whole Note (to name a few). To top it off, some even predicted this nomination! Amy McConnell has been performing from the age of nine months when she appeared in her first television commercial. "Stealing Genius" is her first album. Despite her anglophone name, Amy comes from a francophone background, is fluently bilingual and frequently performs in French. Known for her beautiful voice, impeccable intonation and emotional approach, Amy's style encompasses jazz, pop and musical theatre. William Sperandei (trumpeter, pianist) is a Toronto musician, composer, arranger, and bandleader. His love of the trumpet began in grade school where he studied privately with Bram Smith. He continued his education at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, on a full scholarship and for two and a half years studied classical music and played in diverse ensembles including orchestra, wind ensemble, brass trio, and jazz ensemble, as well as leading his own jazz quintet. It was during a 1992 European tour that Sperandei undertook a stint teaching jazz improvisation at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. As a player, William has appeared on over 100 recordings in the classical, jazz, pop, electronic and film genres and has also arranged music for dozens of artists. William recently performed as the trumpet of Louis Armstrong in the live film score for the biopic "Louis" written by Wynton Marsalis. There is a $15 cover.
