MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND
NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, June 14th, 21st & 28th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: THE BEN ALLISON GROUP AT BIRDLAND
The Ben Allison Group (Ben Allison - bass, Ted Nash - saxophones, Jeremy Pelt - trumpet, Steve Cardenas - guitar, Rudy Royston - drums) will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, July 15th through 19th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Bassist/composer and Connecticut native Ben Allison has developed his own instantly identifiable sound. Known for his inspired arrangements, inventive grooves and hummable melodies, Ben draws from the jazz tradition and a range of influences from rock and folk to 20th century classical and world music traditions, seamlessly blending them into a cinematic, cohesive whole. In addition to his acclaimed groups, "Man Size Safe," "Peace Pipe," and "Medicine Wheel," Ben has collaborated with a wide variety of artists including Mamadou Diabate, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Joey Arias, tap dancers Jimmy Slide and Gregory Hines, and US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. The newly formed Ben Allison Group performs a variety of new music including Ben's interpretations of compositions by the late jazz guitarist Jim Hall. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: PONCHO SANCHEZ AT THE BLUE NOTE
Poncho Sanchez and his band will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, July 17th through 20th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The band features Poncho Sanchez - Congas, David Torres - Piano, Tony Banda - Bass, Francisco Torres - Trombone, George Ortiz - Timbales, Ron Blake - Trumpet, Javier Vergara - Saxophone, and Joey De Leon - Bongos. If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez's music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. There is a $20-$35 cover.
NYC: JOE LOCKE FEATURING VOCALIST KENNY WASHINGTON

Locke is widely considered to be one of the lead voices on his instrument, having won numerous awards and polls, including the 2006, 2008, and 2009 "Mallet Player of the Year" award from the Jazz Journalists Association. Long known as a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range, Locke has performed and recorded with many notable musicians, including Grover Washington Jr., Kenny Barron, Eddie Henderson, Cecil Taylor, Dianne Reeves, and Ron Carter.
