CABARET TONIGHT IN TORONTO: TIO CHORINHO AT JAZZ BISTRO

CABARET TONIGHT IN TORONTO: TIO CHORINHO AT JAZZ BISTRO

The Tio Chorinho Ensemble will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Wednesday, August 7th at 8:00 pm. Tio Chorinho is the only ensemble in Canada dedicated to performing Brazilian choro music. Often described as "the New Orleans jazz of Brazil," choro is the foundation of all modern Brazilian music. It is a complex and sophisticated blend of European musical forms with Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Within its exacting structure, choro is known for evocative and lyrical melodies that often leap over surprising changes of harmony and pulsating samba-style rhythms. It is highly improvisational music, and an extremely virtuosic style that is played to sound very natural and spontaneous. Formed in 2009, Tio Chorinho has developed an impressive repertoire of familiar choro classics by such composers as Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, Waldir Acevedo, and the great mandolin master Jacob do Bandolim. The group has performed for wildly enthusiastic audiences at a number of Toronto and southern Ontario venues, including Harbourfront Centre, Lula Lounge, Expressions of Brazil Festival, Free Times Cafe, TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Mill Race Folk Festival, Stratford Summer Music Festival and more. Tio Chorinho features some of Toronto's leading World music performers, including mandolinist Eric Stein (Beyond the Pale), 7-string guitarist Avital Zemer (King Sunshine), Brazilian percussionist Maninho Costa (Batucada Carioca), and cavaquinho player Carlos Cardoso. They are often joined by guests on accordion, flute and vocals. There is a $12 cover.
