S.F.: THIRD ANNUAL "CELEBRATING MARK MURPHY!" AT YOSHI'S
For the third consecutive year, jazz vocal icon Mark Murphy will be celebrated at YOSHI'S (510 Embarcadero West, Jack London Square, Oakland, CA - 510-238-9200) with a concert & fundraiser for the Jazzschool Institute's vocal scholarship named in his honor. The performance will take place on Monday, November 14th at 8:00 pm. One of the world's most gifted and original male jazz vocalists with a career spanning over 50 years, the six-time Grammy nominee has inspired generations of nascent jazz singers. The evening will feature, among others, four Murphy protegees who have gone on to establish themselves as important innovators in their own right - Kitty Margolis, Madeline Eastman, Ann Dyer and Laurie Antonioli. Besides enjoying successful recording and touring careers they have all followed in Murphy's footsteps to become noted educators. This year, Murphy himself is scheduled to make a special appearance during the evening's proceedings. Margolis originally dreamed up the concert and scholarship to honor the singer who played such a pivotal role in the development of all the featured artists. Emceeing the celebration will be one of jazz's most beloved figures, Bob Parlocha, whose long-running stint at the legendary station KJAZ kept Bay Area jazz lovers glued to their radios every night for "Dinner Jazz." Also joining the evening's festivities will be Andrea Claburn, recipient of last year's "Mark Murphy Vocal Jazz Scholarship." Accompanying the eclectic group of singers will be Adam Shulman on piano, John Shifflett on bass and Jason Lewis on drums. There is a $25 cover.
