TODAY IN CHI: SHEPLEY METCALF BRINGS NEW JAZZ SONGBOOK TO DAVENPORT'S
Boston-based chanteuse Shepley Metcalf brings her tantalizing interpretations of a new songbook by legendary jazz scribe Fran Landesman to DAVENPORT'S (1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830) on Friday, August 27th at 8:00 pm. Metcalf will perform with her musical partner and pianist Ron Roy. Metcalf debuted her Landesman show at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston this spring, and is booked in New York and San Francisco in the coming months. The first U.S. musician to record this new songbook, she recently released her CD, Something Irresistible: Songs of Fran Landesman + Simon Wallace. Landesman's 1955 standard "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" sealed her fame as poet laureate of lovers and losers. Her latest songbook does not disappoint: it's being hailed as "sly, ironic, witty, hip and humorous," "sharp as razors," "cry-in-your-martini saloon songs." The song titles say it all: "In a New York Minute," "It's Cool to be Cool," "Did We Have Any Fun?" and "Music Reaches Places." There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
