HERE & THERE - PART I
This will be an even shorter issue than last week's WEEKEND EDITION since I woke up this morning with only one eye in full operation. The other one is working, but is cherry red and I am attempting to avoid rubbing it - I must have poked myself in the eye while I slept (I guess). I'm only in the first paragraph and I have had to correct just about every other word so far!
The Adelaide Cabaret Festival begins its second week tomorrow, and we already have the first report of the events of the opening days of the "the largest cabaret festival in the world" from one of the founders of the event, Frank Ford, on theCABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and on the blog - . The Adelaide Cabaret Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and a young man well know here on the US, David Campbell, is in his second year as artistic director. There's a link on the home (front) page of the website to the story - and we'll be added more reports as received.
It's sort of the end of an era up in Boston - John O'Neil is ending his 13 year run at the piano at FRANK'S STEAK HOUSE (2310 Massachusetts Avenue, North Cambridge, MA - 617-661-0666 - ) this Saturday, June 19th. John writes: "Frank's has been a strong supporter of live cabaret years before I started there and they continued long after many other places had discontinued live entertainment. Unfortunately, with the economy and the change in demographics, it is just too expensive for them to continue." Currently, John can be found twice a month at CLUB CAFE (209 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA - 617-536-0966 - ) - in June on Friday the 18th and Wednesday, the 23rd from 9:00 pm to midnight.
On a much brighter note, also from the Boston area, comes word that songwriter Bob Levy's song "PARIS WITHOUT YOU", which was recorded by Perry Danos on Bob's first CD "Out In The Cold", has been placed in the new major motion picture by Touchstone (Disney Films), "YOU AGAIN", to be released September 24, 2010 staring Kristen Bell, Betty White, Sigourney Weaver, Kristin Chenoweth, Jamie Lee Curtis, Cloris Leachman, Victor Garber and Patrick Duffy. Bob is one of the songwriters listed on our own http://www.CabaretSings.com/ website, where cabaret performers and cabaret-style song writers can meet.
From the West Coast comes news of a new cabaret venture by Sher Krieger:CELEBRATION CABARET (5820 Oberlin Drive #108, San Diego, CA - 858-320-0090 - ). The schedule opens on the 21st of June with Emily Bergl and Scott Lacy, followed by Rickie Byars Beckwith on the 22nd. In July, performers include Ric's Girls, Andrea Marcovicci, Russ Lorenson, Francesca Amari and others. Watch the upcoming issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for shows as announced.
We have a little "horn tooting" of our own to do. We've been telling folks for over a year that about 6000 visitors come to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website daily, but we've experienced a lot of growth in visits lately. I didn't want to announce anything officially since we've had "spikes" in visits before, but now for 4 weeks in a row our stats have come in at 10,000+ visits a day. Interestingly enough, we've had to lower our ad prices this year in order to try to attract more ads, while delivering more viewers at the same time! The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG is now attracting over 300 visitors a day (it had been running about 1/10th that number until we began promoting it on our TWITTER accounts. Each day we put about a half dozen shows on the blog that we have designated "picks". Yesterday we added a new "preview" system, where we choose one or two picks of shows the following day, and on Sunday we start making our "Picks of the Week", choosing one or two shows from the following week's listings that we especially like - at least on a test basis.
We also publish the HERE & THERE" sections from our twice-weekly newsletters on the blog, plus the reviews and reports on shows seen. These go up the day following the issue date of the newsletter.
Finally, in each MEMBERS ONLY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - sent every Saturday to members - we list all the cabaret events offering discounts to our members by other members for about 8 to 10 days following. This list is also added to the blog on Saturday after that issue goes out.
