NYC: THE DIZZY GILLESPIE ALL-STARS AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars return to THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, October 21st through 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. History has produced its share of great artists and great people - John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues, and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and smaller Alumni All-Star group are the direct descendants of Gillespie's musical ventures. The groups have featured some of Dizzy's closest compatriots: senior statesman and NEA Jazz Master James Moody; musical director John Lee; and veteran Gillespie alumni Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, and Willie Jones III. All of them are outstanding band leaders, educators, and recording artists in their own right. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY: THE SARAH VAUGHAN PROJECT CD RELEASE CELEBRATION

Ann Hampton Callaway, one of the preeminent voices of the American Songbook, will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday, October 23rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. She is joined on stage by Ted Rosenthal, piano; Tim Horner, drums; and Dean Johnson, bass. Ann is a tireless performer who has reached acclaim on Broadway, in theaters, on television, and in a variety of concert halls and jazz clubs around the country. She will celebrate the release of The Sarah Vaughan Project: Live at Dizzy's, recorded last year with the same world-class band. Sarah Vaughan, the NEA Jazz Master and GRAMMY Award-winner, is an all-time favorite jazz vocalist of incalculable influence. It takes courage to dedicate a full concert to this legendary vocalist, but Callaway has repeatedly demonstrated her ability to cover diverse and extraordinarily challenging material with taste, humor, and technical strength. There is a $40 cover.
