NYC: BARBARA ROSENE AND EHUD ASHERIE AT SMALLS

Barbara Rosene and Ehud Asherie will perform at SMALL'S JAZZ CLUB (183 West 10th Street, NYC) on Sunday, October 19th with sets at 7:30 & 9:00 pm. Barbara and Ehud I will be performing some of their favorite songs at the coolest club in the city. Spike Wilner has managed to turn his TWO jazz clubs - SMALLS and MEZZROW, just across the street - into a whole scene on West 10th St. Call for cover/minimum information.

NYC: THE TEDD FIRTH TRIO AT BIRDLAND

Tedd Firth Trio will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sunday, October 19th at 6:00 pm. Tedd Firth is a New York City based musical director, jazz pianist and arranger. As musical director and accompanist he has worked with Barbara Cook, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Maureen McGovern, Tom Wopat, Marilyn Maye, Michael Feinstein, Joshua Bell, Elaine Paige, Tony DeSare, Linda Lavin, Christine Ebersole, Lucie Arnaz, Lee Ann Womack, Faith Prince, John Schneider, Melissa Errico, Karen Akers, Mary Cleere Haran, Margaret Whiting, Carol Sloane and many others. Among the jazz musicians he has performed or recorded with are John Pizzarelli, Houston Person, Frank Wess, Mark Whitfield, Red Holloway, Benny Golson and Joe Morello. New York appearances include Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Birdland, the Blue Note, the Iridium, the Algonquin, the Cafe Carlyle and Feinstein's at the Regency. Numerous national appearances include a performance at the White House. As an arranger/orchestrator, Tedd's work has been performed by most major American symphony orchestras as well as Bernadette Peters and Liza Minnelli. Television appearances include "The Today Show," "Live From Lincoln Center" and "All My Children." There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: CASSANDRA WILSON AT THE BLUE NOTE

Cassandra Wilson, a jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - http://www.bluenote.net/ ) on Thursday through Sunday, October 16th through 19th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. She began playing piano at six, guitar by the age of twelve and was working as a vocalist by the mid-'70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80's, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and released a landmark album titled "Blue Light 'Til Dawn" which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers seeking an approach and repertoire that challenges the supremacy of the American Standard songbook. Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways vintage blues, country and folk music up until the present day. Her awards include: two Grammys, the Django D'Or, The Edison Music Award, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and the 2012 Echo Award for Jazz. There is a $35-$55 cover.

NYC: DIVA: SWINGIN' IT FORWARD! WITH SPECIAL GUEST CYNTHIA SCOTT

DIVA, an ensemble of 15 extremely talented and versatile musicians who just happen to be women (They can't help it - they were born that way) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, October 17th through 19th at 7:30 pm. Led by energetic drummer Sherrie Maricle, DIVA exudes the excitement and force found in the historic big band tradition. With New York as their home base, DIVA performs all over the world, playing contemporary, mainstream big band jazz composed and arranged to fit the individual personalities and styles of the musicians themselves. Audiences can expect to hear high-energy performances packed with unique improvisation, spontaneity, and an emphasis on fun. With special guest Cynthia Scott, a vocalist endlessly praised and employed by artists from Ray Charles to Wynton Marsalis, this is going to be a lively weekend at the club! There is a $35-$40 cover.
