BOSTON: ANDRE WARD AT SCULLERS

Smooth Jazz's top saxophonist Andre Ward will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Saturday, May 17th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Ward is changing the atmosphere by fusing the elements of traditional Jazz, R 'n' B, Funk, Hip-Hop and Pop into an explosive sound that is incomparable. A master of the soprano, alto and tenor saxophone, flute and EWI (electronic wind instrument), the multi-dimensional musician is reinventing the genre with the release of his new album, CAUTION. TORONTO: THE P.J. PERRY QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

The P.J. Perry Quartet (PJ Perry - saxophone, Dave Restivo - piano, Neil Swainson - bass, Terry Clarke - drums) will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, May 15th through Saturday at 9:00 pm. PJ Perry has shared the stage with countless jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Michel LeGrand, Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, Rob McConnell, Slide Hampton, Herb Spanier, Bobby Shew, Fraser McPherson, Tommy Banks, Joe LaBarbera, Clarence "Big" Miller, Red Rodney and many more talented artists, to numerous to list here. Winner of a 1993 Juno Award for Best Jazz Recording for his album "My Ideal", P.J. has received Jazz Report magazine's Critic's Choice Award for Best Alto Sax for, a record, of seven years from 1993 to 1999. In autumn of 1999 Justin Time Records released a Juno nominated recording of P.J. and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. P.J. Perry has become recognized by critics, colleagues and listeners as being one of North America's premier saxophonists. In 2007 P.J. was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Alberta. Recently, he was a featured soloist on the hit 2010 Broadway production of Come Fly Away, highlighting the songs link to Canadian Encyclopedia of Frank Sinatra and the choreography of Twyla Tharpe. There is a $15-$20 cover.

WASHINGTON DC: ARTURO SANDOVAL AT BLUES ALLEY

Arturo Sandoval will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Friday through Sunday, May 16th through 18th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Sandovol is fluent in at least four musical languages. He can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and sooth you with a luscious ballad; with equal power and grace. Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Los Angeles home. A protege of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. WASHINGTON, DC: KRIS BOWERS HEROES & MISFITS CD RELEASE

Pianist and composer Kris Bowers will celebrate the release of his new CD 'Heroes & Misfits' on Fridat & Saturday, May 16th & 17th atBOHEMIAN CAVERNS(2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800). Bowers makes genre-bending jazz that touches upon contemporary R&B, electronica, and forward-thinking modal improvisation. He won first place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. That same year, he showcased his versatility by appearing on Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaborative album, Watch the Throne. In 2014, Bowers released his experimental jazz, R&B, and electronic-influenced debut album Heroes & Misfits on Concord. Call for cover/minimum information.

BETHESDA, MD: JANIVA MAGNESS - BENEFIT FOR CHILD WELFARE LEAGUE OF AMERICAFEATURED CABARET BENEFIT EVENT

Foster care alumni and international blues artist Janiva Magness will host a benefit for CWLA (Child Welfare League of America), the nation's pre-eminent child welfare organization, and the Foster Care Alumni of America (FCAA), for whom Ms. Magness is an Ambassador, at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Saturday, May 17th at 7:00 pm. The Alligator recording artist will preview several new songs, due out in June. Among them: All I Want, a song she and her Grammy-nominated producer, Dave Darling, wrote for CWLA. The refrain is both personal and poignant. Ms. Magness is an internationally recognized premier contemporary blues and soul artist of the highest order. Her recordings continuously reach the top ten radio and sales charts around the world, as well as garnering her top artist honors from the US to the UK and Norway as the front-runner in her genre.
