NYC: JUNE IS JUDY GARLAND MONTH AT DON'T TELL MAMA!
Now in it's 5th Year, "Judy and Liza Together Again", starring internationally acclaimed entertainers Rick Skye and Tommy Femia, named "Best Duo"in 2012 by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets), has been Extended Again at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) with performances scheduled for Saturdays, June 13th, 20th and 27th - all shows at 8:00 pm. Musical Director: Ricky Ritzel (as Mort/Pappy). Teaming up for an evening of "Just POW!", these MAC and Bistro Award winning performers pull out all the stops, singing classic solo's, parodies, duets and just plain whooping and hollering by the greatest mother/daughter team in show biz history. Tommy Femia is a 7 time winner of the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Award for his brilliant portrayal of Judy Garland in "Judy Garland LIVE!", now in it's 20th season at Don't Tell Mama. He has also starred in "Whoop-de-doo", "I Will Come Back" and, most recently, "Norma Does Men". Rick Skye is a multi award winning performer, who has written a string of outrageous comic revues including "The Flip Side of Neil Sedaka" (Bistro Award winning performance), "MaCabaret - a tabloid fable", "The War of the Mama Roses", "It's Madame with an E" (performed with his indefatigable co-star - the one and only Madame), "Barbra and Liza LIVE!" (Leicester Theater and Dublin Theatre Festival) and the International hit - "A Slice O' Minnelli" (MAC Award - Best Impersonation) which has enjoyed successful season's in Covent Garden, at the Apollo Theatre in London's West End and at the Dublin Theatre Festival where he received the Award for "Best Achievement in Performance". "Judy and Liza Together Again" premiered at The Rising Action Theater in Ft. Lauderdale to great acclaim and has since toured the Richmond Triangle Theater, Actors Theater of Minnesota, The Palace Theater in Danbury, Connecticut and Martini's Over Eighth in San Diego. NYC: STING*CHRONICITY WITH ROSEMARY LOAR
STING*chronicity, with Rosemary Loar will be presented at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, June 27th at 4:00 pm. The show offers a combination of monologues with a variety of musical arrangements of the music of the contemporary songwriter, Sting. The show is "set" in Madison Square Garden on the occasion of the final reunion concert of the iconic band, The Police, which was headed by Sting. STING*chronicity surveys the diverse audience, and their very varied interpretations of his music as the words of his songs are filtered by their unique lives and experiences. The show includes many of Sting's most popular and including "Message In A Bottle", "Moon Over Bourbon Street," "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Roxanne," "Every Breath You Take." as well as some lesser known songs, like "Ghost Story," a song from Sting's Broadway show, The Last Ship. Monologues were provided by some of New York's most impressive playwrights: Diana Amsterdam, Mike Folie, Matt Hoverman, Cheryl Stern, Robert W. Atwood and Rosemary Loar, plus a charming offering from 13 year old Mia Katz. Loar conceived, directed and starred in the popularThe Alternative Torch series at Symphony Space from 2004-2006. As a recording artist, she can be heard on Sting's soundtrack for the movie The Emperor's New Groove, the cast albums of Chess and Sunset Boulevard and on The Listening Library Series. Last year she release of her sixth album, When Harry Met The Duke, a tribute to Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen. Barry Kleinbort who recently received rave reviews for directing John Epperson: Show Trash off-Broadway is at the director's helm. Renowned jazz artist/pianist and arranger Frank Ponzio will serve as musical director and will be joined by jazz bassist Tom Hubbard. Ms. Loar's extensive musical theater credits include a critically acclaimed turn as Grizabella in Cats, Sunset Boulevard (with Glenn Close), The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (with John Larroquette in L.A. and Shuler Hensley at Madison Square Garden), You Can't Take It With You, and Chess, as well as Once Upon A Mattress with Sarah Jessica Parker. NYC: "AN EVENING WITH JILLIAN LAURAIN - THE RHYTHMS OF MY LIFE"
Opera Singer/ Musical Theatre and Concert Stage artist Jillian Laurain brings her award winning vocal talents back to the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) in her new show "An Evening With Jillian Laurain - The Rhythms Of My Life" on Saturday, June 27th at 7:00 pm. Jillian sings songs by our great composers and lyricists including Leonard Bernstein, John Kander & Fred Ebb, "Yip" Harburg & Harold Arlen, Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields, Duke Ellington. She is joined by Don Rebic on piano, Tom Hubbard on bass, Sean Harkness on guitar, Ed Ornowski on drums and Emedin Rivera on percussion. The show is directed by Nikki Saed. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: THE VAUDEVILLIANS: BRINGING UP BABY
After selling out an often-extended Off-Broadway run in 2013 (which attracted the likes of Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Joan Rivers, RuPaul and SNL's Kate McKinnon), a national tour, a 3-month Australian tour (where she was nominated for the Aussie equivalent of a Tony Award), and a summer run in Provincetown, RuPaul's Drag Race favorite Jinkx Monsoon will return to New York with the World Premiere of THE VAUDEVILLIANS: BRINGING UP BABY, a new musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales. This limited engagement begam performances May 21st at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). Remaining shows are Wednesday through Sunday, June 25th through 28th at 7:00 pm. Dr. Dan and Kitty Witless were put on ice in the Twenties, and had their entire music catalogue purloined by today's pop artists. Now the hottest act ever frozen alive is back again, with more swinging hits from their stolen songbook! There's only one problem: Kitty's "in a family way" and no one's quite sure where the kid came from. Can The Vaudevillians still put on a show while bringing up baby? Major Scales is the evil twin of Richard Andriessen, a musician, writer and performer based in Seattle. He has written everything from award-winning New York shows on the east coast to music for amateur adult films on the west. Jinkx Monsoon is the alter ego of Jerick Hoffer, who graduated with a degree in theatrical performance from Cornish College in Seattle. With ten years experience on stage, Hoffer is a seasoned Portland-born entertainer who has captured the attention of his native northwest region. As early as 2006, Hoffer appeared as the lead dancer in the world's largest drag queen chorus line, which made the Guinness Book of World Records. By 2012, he had advanced to roles in Seattle theaters, playing Moritz in "Spring Awakening" (produced by Balagan Theatre), Angel in "Rent" (produced by The 5th Avenue Theatre), and Hedwig in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (produced by Balagan Theatre and Seattle Theatre Group). In 2014 he was nominated for the Helpmann Award (alongside the likes of Cate Blanchett, Ivo Van Hove, Denis O'Hare and Baz Luhrmann), the Australian equivalent of a Tony, for his performanace in The Vaudevillians. NYC: LE SCANDAL CABARET CONTINUES AT THE BEECHMAN
NYC's longest running burlesque variety show, LE SCANDAL CABARET, continues on Saturdays, at 10:30 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). In its fourteenth year, Le Scandal features variety acts, circus performers, live music and a bevy of burlesque beauties. New performers every week! NYC: PARTLY CLOUDY PEOPLE PRESENTS "TWAS THE HAPPIEST HOUR BEFORE PRIDE"
Partly Cloudy People presents "Twas the Happiest Hour Before Pride", an afternoon of cocktails and storytelling by some of New York's most inspiring artists at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Saturday, June 27th at 3:30 pm. They will share what pride means to them through song, music, comedy and play. Featuring: Andrea Prestinario, Matt Smith, Mama Rice, Thomas Picasso, Justin Quackenbush, Sarah Kinsey, Therese Anderberg, Sarah Nedwek, Tricia Alexandro and Brandon Sturiale. A portion of proceeds will go to Safe Horizon's Streetwork project which provides support to homeless youth, many of whom identify as LGBT. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: 50 SHADES OF GAY WITH IKE AVELLI
Ike Avelli shows his LGBT PRIDE by bringing his 3rd Original Show, "50 Shades of Gay" to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Saturday, June 27th at 9:30 pm. Written, Produced and Starring Ike Avelli, the show features Amber Ferrari, Jeza Belle and Tym Moss. The, will celebrate with a variety packed night, filled with Costumes/ Wigs/ Glitter/ Rainbows and plenty of audience participation! There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: BRANDON STERILE: A SECOND FIRST IMPRESSION
Brandon Sturiale, music director/ pianist/ keyboardist (The Marvelous Wonderettes and Iron Curtain Off-Broadway, Gypsy national tour), is now choosing the notes himself, having just released an album of original music, He will perform his show, "A Second First Impression" at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Friday, June 26th at 9:30 pm. The first half of the show will include his melodic piano solos along with hilarious anecdotes about growing up in small-town middle America, where he learned to play piano and avoided playing sports out of fear of being hit with the ball. For the second half, he will be joined on stage by a 4-piece band and several incredible Broadway performers to help sing his adult contemporary vocal songs, which have been compared to Elton John and Jim Brickman. Throw in his amusing cabaret songs (one of which was a finalist in the Ken Davenport Songwriting Competition), a selection from his upcoming musical, and a fan-favorite surprise and you have a delightful evening of evocative piano music, catchy vocal tunes, and a touch of engaging, lighthearted humor. NYC: JEREMY JORDAN RETURNS TO 54 BELOW
After a sold-out two-week NYC solo concert debut last fall, Jeremy Jordan returns to 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) for eight performances this summer with a brand new show. Shows are scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, June 22nd through 24th and Friday & Saturday, June 26th & 27th at 7:00 pm, with an added show on the 27th at 9:30 pm and Monday & Tuesday, June 29th & 30th at 7:00 pm. The star of The Last 5 Years movie has Broadway credits that include Newsies, Bonnie & Clyde, West Side Story, and Rock of Ages. He is also known for his role on NBC's Smash, as well as major concert engagements such as A Bed And A Chair at Encores! and Parade at Avery Fisher Hall. There is a $65-$120 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ETHAN LIPTON & HIS ORCHESTRA AT JOE'S PUB
Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra will perform at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Saturday, June 27th at 7:00 pm. They play an edgy brand of jazz/folk/alternative nosh with a chewy singer-songwriter center. With melancholy wit and a cockeyed worldview, sepia-toned frontman Lipton and band mates Eben Levy (guitar), Ian Riggs (bass) and Vito Dieterle (sax) deliver songs steeped in mixed-message sincerity and soul. The band has appeared at Celebrate Brooklyn, MASS MOCA, Bryant Park, the Camden Opera House, Tangier (LA), Vermont Arts Exchange, and has been featured on NPR and radio stations around the country. NYC: FEDOROV & KRUZENSHTERN AT JOE'S PUB
JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) presents Fedorov & Kruzenshtern on Saturday, June 27th at 9:30 pm. Wild energy, broken rhythms, strange psychedelic structures, furious guitar sound are coupled with inimitable melodies and charismatic voice - this is how Fedorov & Kruzenshtern sounds live. Imagine Swans meets King Crimson meets Feodor Chaliapin onstage in one spontaneous musical orgy - from progressive rock to free-jazz, from post-punk to ritual music - all imaginable genres are melted into an astonishingly tight musical journey. The lead singer of the outstanding Russian rock band Auktyon, Leonid Fedorov's collaboration with Tel Aviv based avant-rock outfit Kruzenshtern & Parohod has been launched spontaneously in 2013, resulting in 2 albums up to date and numerous sold out concerts in Russia & Israel. Since then the project has transformed enormously as such intensive music collaboration demands new experimental forms for each performance. Starting from very melodious and expressive songs, associated with Fedorov's unique vocal, they broke into creative journey without any musical borders, and full of allusions and interpretations even for those who do not understand Russian lyrics. Featured are Leonid Fedorov - vocals, guitar; Igor Krutogolov - bass, vocals, saw; Dmitri Ozersky - keyboards, percussion; Ruslan Gross - clarinet; and Guy Shechter - drums. There is a $45 cover.
NYC: JUSTIN VIVIAN BOND: SWALLOW MY PRIDE
Mx Justin Vivian Bond, writer, singer, painter, and performance artist, performs at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Saturday, June 27th at 11:30 pm and Sunday, June 28th at 9:30 pm. Mx Bond is the author of the Lambda Literary Award winning memoir TANGO: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels, published by The Feminist Press and Susie Says - a collaboration with Gina Garan (Powerhouse Books, 2012). V's debut CD DENDRPOPHILE was self-released on WhimsyMusic in 2011 and was followed by SILVER WELLS in 2012. In 2011 Justin Vivian's art exhibition The Fall of the House of Whimsy was presented at Participant Inc. in New York City. Mx Bond was nominated for a Tony Award for Kiki and Herb Alive On Broadway in 2007. Other notable theatrical endeavors include starring as Warhol Superstar Jackie Curtis in Scott Wittman's production of Jukebox Jackie: Snatches of Jackie Curtis as part of La Mama E.T.C.'s 50 Anniversary Season, originating the role of Herculine Barbin in Kate Bornstein's groundbreaking play Hidden: A Gender, touring with the performance troupe The Big Art Group and appearing in John Cameron Mitchell's film Shortbus. Other films include Sunset Stories (2012), Imaginary Heroes (2004), and Fanci's Persuasion (1995). Mx Bond is a recipient of The Ethyl Eichelberger Award, The Peter Reed Foundation Grant, and The Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award for Performance Art/Theater, an Obie and a Bessie.
