NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ BRUNCH: ALAN FERBER AND HIS NYU JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Alan Ferber and his NYU Jazz Ensemble will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, January 25th with show at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm as part of the club's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. For the last four years, Alan Ferber has been recognized as one of the leading trombonists of his generation in Down Beat magazine's International Critics' Poll and Readers' Poll. He has released five albums as a bandleader, all of which blur traditional boundaries through an intriguing mix of influences. Alan's newest release, March Sublime, features stunning new music for big band and was nominated for a 2014 Grammy award in the 'Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album' category. Additionally, it has received rave reviews. Ferber's music draws from a broad stylistic base considering the array of artists with whom he has closely worked. In the jazz world, he has performed and/or recorded with Esperanza Spalding, Charlie Hunter, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ted Nash, Todd Sickafoose, Miguel Zenon, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Michael Formanek, David Binney, Lee Konitz, John Ellis, John Hollenbeck, and Don Byron. He has worked extensively in other genres with artists including Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Sufjan Stevens, The National, Dr. Dre, Harry Connick Jr, Michael Buble, and Beirut. His discography lists well over 100 CDs on which he has played trombone. As a composer and arranger, Alan has been commissioned to write for the Atlantic Brass Quintet, Paul McCandless, Sara and Rachel Caswell, the Asphalt Orchestra, Jon Gordon, and numerous universities. He is also the recipient of a 2013 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant, funded by the Doris Duke Foundation. This grant will allow him to create and promote a brand new extended work for his Nonet over a three-year period. Finally, Alan enjoys cultivating emerging talent as an adjunct professor of jazz trombone and composition at New York University's Steinhardt School, Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Conservatory, and Montclair State University's John J Cali School of Music. NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH WITH GABRIELLE STRAVELLI

Bistro Award winning vocalist, Gabrielle Stravelli, returns with her Sunday Jazz Brunch on January 18th at LE PESCADEUX (90 Thompson Street, NYC - 212-966-0021), a French restaurant in the heart of Soho. They will play three sets from 12:30 to 4:00 pm. She will be joined by Saul Rubin on guitar and Pat O'Leary on bass in this charming boite that offers a great, well-priced menu and cozy atmosphere. Award-winning vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her unique take on material from the new American songbook as well as classic standards by artists as varied as Pink Floyd and Duke Ellington, Dolly Parton and Johnny Mercer. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric. Gabrielle has performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York including Carnegie Hall, Iridium Jazz Club, Birdland, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Reservations are strongly suggested. No cover, no minimum. 

NYC: SUNDAY OPEN MIC AT THE MET - NOON TO 2:30 PM

Sunday Open Mic comes to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on the 2nd & 4th Sundays each month from 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm (signup ay 11:30 am). Presented and hosted by Susan Winter and Deb Berman, the "OPEN MIC AT THE MET" is not your average Open Mic since it will be presented on the iconic stage, with amazing acoustics, high-end equipment, and experienced sound engineer to help create a concert-like experience in Metropolitan Room's friendly, warm environment. Each Open Mic offers different pianists to accompany your performance. There is a $15 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum. * bagels and various spreads available *

TORONTO: SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH THE TREVOR PEVERLEY DUO

The Trevor Peverley Duo will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, January 25th from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm as part of the club's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. Trevor Peverley is an up and coming Guitarist/Composer from Vancouver, who favours a unique and eclectic approach to improvisation. In performance he uses standard repertoire as well as his own compositions as a vehicle for selfless spontaneity and interaction. Currently in his third year of study at Humber College's music program, since coming to Toronto he has had the pleasure of studying with guitarists Geoff Young, David Occhipinti, and Kim Ratcliffe, and performing in ensembles directed by Pat Labarbera, Kirk MacDonald and Kieran Overs. Trevor will be joined on our stage by bassist Marshal Herridge. There is a $5 cover.
