WASHINGTON, DC: COREY HARRIS "RASTA BLUES EXPERIENCE" AT BLUES ALLEY
Corey Harris' "Rasta Blues Experience" will be presented at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday throughSaturday, January 29th through 31st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Corey Harris is a guitarist, songwriter, and performer who is leading a contemporary revival of country blues with a fresh, modern hand. He is a powerful and compelling singer and an accomplished guitarist whose musical artistry is complemented by serious explorations of the historical and cultural conditions that gave rise to the blues. He demonstrates his respect for the past and his mastery of the Mississippi Delta blues tradition by interpreting the songs of early blues luminaries in new ways, while also creating an original vision of the blues by infusing his music with a broad range of sounds and styles. "Fulton Blues", Corey Harris' new collection of both original and classic material, celebrates the timeless sound of traditional blues with fresh, insightful lyrics that paint an unflinching picture of life in the American South, both then and now. "Fulton Blues" is rooted in the blues tradition with true story-telling and soulful musicianship. It is the next step in the nearly twenty-year career of today's most daring and innovative acoustic blues player. There is a $25 cover.
WASHINGTON, DC: REGINALD CYNTJE AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS
Trombonist Reginald Cyntje born on the island of Dominica and raised on St. Thomas, USVI, will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Friday & Saturday, January 30th & 31st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Cyntje has been mixing cultural heritage with Black American Music since the beginning of his formative years. Growing up in the US Virgin Islands, he was steeped in the rich cultural music known as Quelbe (the official music of the USVI). Quelbe was Reginald's introduction to improvised music. One of his favorite Quelbe songs, Queen Mary, has a powerful message set to syncopated rhythm. This song sets the tone for his mission as a musician - to inspire change with music - with cultural heritage at the forefront and social justice as the message. In 2013, Cyntje released his sophomore album simply titled Love. After debuting at #3 on the CMJ Jazz chart, Love made it to #10 on the CMJ Top 40 Jazz Chart. The album is a tribute to the human spirit. On April 22, 2014 (Earth Day), Reginald Cyntje released his third album Elements of Life featuring pianist Allyn Johnson, bassist Herman Burney, drummer Amin Gumbs, vocalist Christie Dashiell, steel pannist Victor Provost and saxophonist Brian Settles. The album explores the connection between the human being and the elements that nurture us. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
BETHESDA, MD: THE NIGHTHAWKS AT BETHESDA BLUES
The Nighthawks perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Friday, January 30th at 8:00 pm. The Nighthawks had its genesis when lead singer/ harmonica player extraordinaire Mark Wenner returned to his native Washington, DC, after six years in New York City, lured back by the success of his friend Bobby Radcliff's local acclaim with a blues band. Mark joined forces with a very young Jimmy Thackery and formed The Nighthawks in 1972. In 1974, they decided to get the best rhythm section the area had to offer: Jan Zukowski on bass and Pete Ragusa on drums. The Nighthawks have played with nearly all the living blues legends as well as a new generation of bands sometimes called "the Blue Wave," and released several important albums, including the best-selling Jacks and Kings with Pinetop Perkins, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, Calvin Jones and Bob Margolin. There is a $20 cover - Dance Floor Open.
