NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: STEARNS MATTHEWS PRESENTS A "SNEAK PEEK" OF HIS DEBUT ALBUM
Stearns Matthews, three-time MAC Award nominee, will bring his show "Sneak Peek" to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Thuesday, June 17th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, June 21st at 4:30 pm. Stearns has appeared twice at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Annual Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and was the first-ever first runner-up in the Metropolitan Room's MetroStar Talent Challenge in 2008. After raising $17,000 in a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2013, Stearns has been hard at work with musical director Christopher Denny and producer Paul Rolnick on producing his debut album, due out in the autumn of 2014. But Stearns just couldn't stand to wait that long to unveil the arrangements on the album - that's where SNEAK PEEK comes in. The show will feature some (not all this is just a peek!) of the songs from the album as well as a few tunes that didn't make the cut due to time constraints. Consider this the "Special Features" section on the DVD: bits from the cutting room floor, commentary from the artist, and an all-around good time. Theatre composers Stephen Schwartz, Richard Rodgers, and Harold Arlen will all be represented, as well as some from the popular end of the spectrum, like Roger Miller, Burt Bacharach, and Don Gibson. Crafted together with Christopher Denny, the arrangements are at times lush and romantic, at others rousing and exhilarating. Lennie Watts directs. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Drawing upon influences as diverse as James Taylor and Prince, her unique style walks a fine line between folk, pop, country and soul. Intensely vulnerable and physical on stage, Sarah pulls the audience in with her incredible live performance; locking eyes, her hair whipping every which way as she lives her songs and invites you in to do the same. Sarah grew up sailing the high seas with her family (her dad is a boat designer), and acknowledged music as her calling after seeing a gospel concert in college. Mentored and developed by legendary producer Chuck Plotkin (Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan), Dashew has garnered unanimous critical praise both for her recordings and live shows. Unfortunately, one day, tragedy struck. While touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow - instantly freezing them alive.
