NYC: COURT GRAVES IS JAZZIN' WITH THE BAND

The Sunday Series at Abingdon Presents Court Graves IN JAZZIN' WITH THE BAND on Sunday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm at JUNE HAVOC THEATRE - ABINGDON THEATRE COMPLEX (312 West 36th Street, NYC - 866-811-4111). The show is a benefit concert for not-for-profit Abingdon Theatre Company. After performing solo shows in New York, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, Court Graves is excited to bring JAZZIN' WITH THE BAND to the Abingdon. Accompanied by The Matt Baker Trio, JAZZIN' WITH THE BAND features Mr. Graves and a group of his favorite singers from the New York area performing Old and New Standards. Also performing: Evan Shalat, a sophomore at Skidmore College majoring in business and music; Maria Marsalis, a recent graduate of AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts in NYC; Daniella Rodrigues, from Australia and a new graduate of AMDA; Cathy Venable, a Broadway pianist on 11 shows as well as the New York Philharmonic, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall; Robert Vest, Southern Entertainer, singer and songwriter and creator of the "Robert Vest and Friends" for the Sunday Series at Abingdon; Ras Chemash Lamed, a jazz singer, performer, and gourmet vegetarian chef in NYC; Jim Malloy, over the past 15 years a jazz band singer, seen on Thursday nights at Swing46 in NYC; Australian Jazz Pianist Matt Baker, who has performed at Jazz festivals, clubs, and concert halls in Australia, Europe, America, and the Pacific. There is a $20 cover. All proceeds go to support the programs of the not-for-profit Abingdon Theatre Company.

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ARTURO SANDOVAL AT THE BLUE NOTE

Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, November 1st through 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. A protege of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn't take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world's most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars performing with Celine Dion, at the Grammy Awards with Justin Timberlake and as a leader, as well as on the Billboard Awards with Alicia Keys. He is joined by Ed Calle, sax; Kemuel Roig, piano; Dennis Marks, bass; Alexis Arce, drums and Armando Arce, percussion. There is a $30-$45 cover.

NYC: KEVIN RAY & FRIENDS AT THE IRIDIUM

ScoBar Entertainment presents Kevin Ray at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB(1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Sunday, November 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. With performances by Kristine Bogan, Abby Burke, Stephen Tyler Davis, Max Demers, Danica Dora, Grace Wall, Darcy Wright, and more!Kevin Ray is a songwriter/singer and pianist from Los Angeles, currently residing in New York City. His latest musical, Central Avenue Breakdown, just got back from a production at the Daegu International Music Festival in South Korea and returned to New York for an encore presentation at the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) where it won six awards including Excellence in Music and Orchestations in 2011. Kevin is currently busy at work constructing his newest musical, Maquiladora, a story about young factory workers in Juarez, Mexico. Kevin has recorded seven solo albums including Speak Now (2009), Karaoketown (2004), and RadioFriendly (2002). In 2006, he composed the MAC-nominated Seasoned Greetings - complete with twelve original holiday songs performed by the world famous singing waitstaff at Ellen's Stardust Diner. That record went onto receive critical acclaim including a MAC nomination for the song Fat Christmas. He is currently working on his new record, Radio Silence, due out later this year. There is a $25 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: TED NASH BIG BAND 'CHAKRA' - CD RELEASE

The Ted Nash Big Band will celebrate the release of their latest CD 'Chakra' at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, October 31st through November 3rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Saxophonist Ted Nash is a vital part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Though steeped in tradition, Nash never hesitates to push boundaries when required. Whether playing with Wynton Marsalis or his eclectic group Odeon - featuring tuba and violin - Nash always stays true to the music. At Dizzy-s he will be joined by his own big band, which is currently celebrating the release of its new album, Chakra. Following the success of his previous big band album, Portrait in Seven Shades (Two GRAMMY Award nominations), Ted brings a new vision and creative expression to his latest recording. With Ted Nash - conductor, alto sax, alto flute; Ben Kono - alto sax, soprano sax, flute, clarinet; Charles Pillow - alto sax, clarinet, flute, piccolo; Dan Willis - tenor sax, clarinet; Anat Cohen - tenor sax, clarinet; Paul Nedzela - baritone sax, bass clarinet; Kenny Rampton - lead trumpet; Alphonso Horne - trumpet; Ron Horton - trumpet; Tim Hagans - trumpet; Alan Ferber - lead trombone; Mark Patterson - trombone; Charley Gordon - trombone; Jack Schatz - bass trombone; Christopher Ziemba - piano; Martin Wind - bass; Ulysses Owens - drums.
