BOSTON: CHARO AT SCULLERS
The legendary Charo will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - ) on Friday & Saturday, October 25th & 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Only a few people in show business are recognized by just one name. Charo is one of them. Since the 70s, Charo, the musician, singer, comedienne, stage and screen performer, has been an integral proponent of contemporary Latin music. The spotlight on Charo has been shining brighter than ever since her acceptance of the Female Pop Album of the Year Award. She received this accolade at the Billboard International Latin Music Conference for her flamenco inspired platinum album, Guitar Passion. Currently, Charo is performing in her new show, Charo in Concert: A Musical Sensation, at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas to sold-out audiences. She is also busy promoting her CD Charo and Guitar, a highly anticipated mixture of her patented rhythms and mastery of classical guitar. Najee will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) onFriday through Sunday, October 25th through 27th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. A native New Yorker, Najee began his iconic career playing clarinet, saxophone and flute in his hometown Jamaica, Queens New York. While in high school his tutelage included not only Jimmy Heath but Frank Foster, and Dr. Billy Taylor at the Jazzmobile in Harlem. Honing his skills as a flutist he additionally studied with Harold Jones at the Manhattan School of Music. Najee is the recipient of many music awards including the Soul Train Music Award for Best Jazz Artist, NAACP Image Award, & Trumpet Awards. Najee has toured extensively throughout the U.S. including Europe, Asia and Africa. Call for cover/minimum information.
D.C.: WADADA LEO SMITH WITH TEN FREEDOM SUMMERS
Wadada Leo Smith performs at ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (1333 H Street NE, Washington, DC - 202-399-7993 - ) on Friday & Saturday, October 25th & 26th at 8:00 pm. The show is in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. Characterized for his brilliant compositions and refusal to be boxed into restrictive definitions of genres, Smith presents Ten Freedom Summers, his soul-searching tribute to the Civil Rights Movement paying homage to heroes including Emmett Till, Rosa Parks, Medger Evers and Martin Luther King, Jr. Forty years in the making, Ten Freedom Summers has been hailed as one of the few musical pieces to ever achieve perfect synergy between jazz and classical musical styles. MARYLAND: JAZZ SAXOPHONIST ART SHERROD JR. AT BETHESDA BLUES
Smooth and urban jazz saxophonist Art Sherrod Jr will perform atBETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500 - ) on Friday, October 25th at 8:00 pm. Sherrod grew up in Palestine, Texas surrounded by parents who made music a main part of the Sherrod household. At the age of thirteen Art joined the high school band and chose the saxophone. By the time he graduated from high school he had received numerous awards and had been recognized as an All-Area, All Region and All-State Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophonist. Art relocated to the D.C. area as he continued to develop as an artist, living his dream and sharing his passion for music. Besides alto, tenor and soprano saxophone Art plays electronic wind controller (EWI). He is an interactive performer who, during and after performances, often sits and talks with the audience. Joining Art is R&B, gospel, and dance music singer and actress Ann Nesby. She is the former lead singer of Sounds of Blackness and a songwriter with credits including hits sung by Patti Labelle and Gladys Knight. There is a $30 cover.
