NYC: PAT MARTINO ORGAN TRIO AT BIRDLAND THROUGH SATURDAY
The Pat Martino Organ Trio will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) on Tuesday through Saturday, April 2nd through 6th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. One of the greatest guitarists in jazz, Martino got his start on the "chitlin' circuit" in the 1960s with organ groups led by "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Trudy Pitts, Charles Earland and others. Having made a full and remarkable recovery from a life-threatening illness in the 1980's that caused him to forget how to play the guitar, Martino relearned by listening to his own early recordings and has re-emerged as a veteran presence on the jazz scene due in part to a successful association with Blue Note Records. Today, Martino lives in his native Philadelphia and continues to grow as a musician. His playing is as fiery and technically brilliant as ever and he constantly challenges himself with new music and exciting band mates. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
