We already have close to fifty 2010-2011 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members! You see, in addition to several folks who signed up the past few days, about 35 members of the now discontinued CABARET FOR SENIORS program are still eligible to receiver their free 2009-2010 membership extension for 2010-2011! All members who received the free extensions have been notified - and warned to ignore the many "reminders to renew" that we will be sending out to members and subscribers while we update our database to reflect renewals. We are also awarding extended 2009-2010 memberships to anyone who joined after April 1, 2010 (which happens to be just 2 people).

Its one of those days when the wallet is empty but the air is aglow with anticipation. There's money in the pipeline (over $1300 in receivables/promises/pledges) but there seems to be a kink in the pipe somewhere - and that's ok as long as the kink is straightened out by Friday when the rent is due. Maybe my mailbox will include some good news today.

---------------
We're working on a few new things - getting the website reorganized for the new membership year, tuning up some pages, and even adding new features to our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG - http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ . We received a review of Mary Forster Conklin's recent show at the METROPOLITAN ROOM and it was so interesting and well written, I decided to post it on the blog (we're able to add photos easily now). Check it out -as well as the other items on that special site.

We add new items to the blog daily - including our choices of great cabaret shows of the day. And if you follow on TWITTER - http://twitter.com/cabarethotline - you will be notified each time something is added.

---------------
Our Cape Cod pal Joni Rapp wrote up a report on the recent PROVINCETOWN CABARET FEST for another website and now sent a new report to us for use on our website, including a lot of photos. We're creating a special page for this report and adding a special section for all cabaret festivals (up to now we've been combining them with the Award events. Takes a little extra work but hopefully you'll be able to find news, reviews and reports on all these grand and exciting events from around the world. Stay tuned.

Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!

---------------
See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!

Look for more news on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ), on the blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and updates, picks & reminders on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).

---------------
And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about but we've run out of space so the rest will have to wait until Thursday's issue.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

HERE & THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE & THERE - PART I
===============
I love putting these newsletters together twice a week - and I hope that you all at least glance through the listings as see the variety of shows, the number of talented performers, and the many locations and venues where the art of cabaret is presented and performed.

Check out a few of the show listings for Melbourne's BUTTERFLY CLUB, for example. As a cabaret fan, I almost am tempted to retire there some day (if I ever decide to retire). Or see what the folks in the Chicago area are cooking up - they only have a few venues to perform in compared to NYC, so they have to be especially creative.

At the same time, I'm a little concerned about the lack of cabaret news from some parts of the USA where cabaret seemed to thrive just a year or so ago. I understand that the economy is still in the tank and the near 10% unemployment is a drag, but just like those pesky dandelions on the lawn, cabaret always seems to resurrect itself in times like these.

And I'm doing my best to help!

If you're in the Los Angeles area, just a reminder that the "last call" for live auditions for The Art of Cabaret - Master Classes in Song Performance this summer at the THE PERRY-MANSFIELD PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL & CAMP (40755 RCR 36 Steamboat Springs, CO - 970-879-7125 - http://www.perry-mansfield.org/ ) the week of August 23rd through 30th is tonight - Monday, April 26th. Call 1-800-430-2787 right away to arrange your audition. See the website at http://www.perry-mansfield.org/ for details. I've heard a lot of great things about this program. One of my best pals Sue Matsuki is still all aglow about attending this camp a few years ago and another graduate, Gretchen Reinhagen, uses the camp in all her publicity materials and actually was inspired to create her Nightlife Award winning show about Kaye Ballard (last performance this Saturday, May 1st at the METROPOLITAN ROOM. See details in the next section.

So you write a song. You record the song. Great, yes? Well, how about these apples (to quote Gretchen): Boston-area based singer/songwriter Krisanthi Pappas just received the great news that a song that she wrote, One Slow Dance A Day, will be making its PRIME TIME television debut on a new TV show called PARENTHOOD on NBC - airing on this Tuesday's episode, April 27th (10:00 pm EST). She's singing the track with her band (Bill Duffy on piano, Steve Skop on bass, John DiSanto on drums and John Payne on tenor sax). More details at http://www.nbc.com/parenthood/about/

Spring is here - and concerts in the park can't be far behind. Broadway and cabaret performer Raissa Katona Bennett (Phantom of the Opera, Chess) hosts an amazing array of Broadway and cabaret artists as THE CONCERTS AT TUDOR CITY GREENS has its 2010 Spring Launch at Tudor City Greens Park (enter at Tudor City Place between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets) on Wednesday, May 5th at 6:00 pm. All the details including performers in the listings below.

It's nearly all over but the counting. There's been a sudden drop in promotional email and new show notices around here because the voting for this year's MAC AWARD winners is nearly over. Believe me, some nominees took the "overkill" route. sometimes sending daily invites to their shows. I'm glad that's over - see next item:

---------------
ATTENTION MAC MMBERS: Please be sure to mail in your completed MAC Award ballots so they are received by tomorrow - April 27th (which means, I guess, delivery by messenger). Ballots received after the deadline will not be counted. PLUS, after today - Monday, April 26th - MAC AWARD show tickets will no longer be available by mail and may only be purchased online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/101011 . Your tickets will be held at "Will Call" at BB KINGS for pickup the night of the show (the $75 Silver level tickets are sold out.

---------------
ATTENTION CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERS: Did you send back your 2010 MAC AWARD STRAW POLL contest entry yet? DEADLINE IS SUNDAY, MAY 2nd. Remember, the straw poll is really a contest and not a vote. Just mark your ballot with the folks you predict to win in each category and send it back. The person(s) who most accurately predicts the most winners will be awarded a set of 6 cabaret CDs (the award will be divided if more than one winner results.) We are only balloting on the top categories. If you need a new entry form, let me know.

---------------
It's raining again today in NYC - you know what they say about April Showers (I actually was hoping all that rain in March would mean fewer showers in April, but I guess not). It's supposed to continue through Wednesday at least.

---------------
Something new has been added to the roster of ad styles on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - Super HomePage Sidebar Ads. They're actually the same size as the SUPER SIDEBAR ads that appear on over 2600 of the 6000 pages on the website, but appear only on 50 or so most popular pages. They are so new I haven't had a chance to include then in the ADVERTISING INFO page yet. The first one appears right now on the website - check it out. Regular HomePage sidebar ads are $25 per week (2 week minimum), and these double size ads are $45 per week. No discounts or rebates on HomePage Sidebars, either size, and they must be paid via PAYPAL. Only two "supers" will be allowed each week. There is a $15 one-time design charge (more for animated ads depending on the number of panels).

---------------
We also closed down the MARCH IS CABARET MONTH website over the weekend - anyone visiting there will be automatically transferred to the regular CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The same fate might befall out CABARETSINGS.COM website unless we can attract more participants. Inclusion on the site - http://www.CabaretSings.com/ - is free for all songwriter members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The website expires on May 30th so I need to make a decision before then if I plan to continue it. If you're a songwriter and would like to be included, a simple membership is all that's required.

GREGG CULLING'S REVIEW OF MARY FOSTER CONKLIN AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

You could tell it's Spring in New York when you came out of the subway on 42nd Street and 3rd Avenue. As you reach the street, instead of bus fumes and garbage, you smell hyacinths! Yes, all last week long, the huge planters along 42nd Street were filled with perfuming hyacinths, and their scent wafted down the street and put smiles on faces (but perhaps also caused some sneezes, too).

More than any other season, Spring to some singers seems to demand they haul out as many songs of the season that they can dig out of their trunks. Mary Foster Conklin was no exception, but then she's from North Carolina and this New York winter, she felt, was one of the worst ever and she is glad it's over. Some of us enjoyed it actually, but her song choices in her engaging new show "Up Jumped Spring" at the Metropolitan Room this week nonetheless were most welcome and appreciated.

Opening with a propulsive  (Rodgers/Hammerstein), you knew immediately that you were at a jazzy dive with her crackerjack band (Janice Friedman,, piano, Marco Panascia, bass and Todd Isler, drums) driving this tuner to an exciting fever.  Conklin is truly an engaging artist who knows her way around a song's lyrics and has a warm and expressive voice with a definite feel for jazz. Friedman was especially wonderful playing Bill Evans' "In April" with the lovely lyrics of Roger Schore ("Feeling the charm of Spring...with luck you'll win your Spring bouquet.") The Gershwins' "I've Got a Crush on You," in a special Jeff Klitz arrangement, brought out the sexy in Conklin, perhaps because she said this song was one of her husband's favorites.

In a Conklin set you can always expect to hear some historic jazz tunes, like Freddie Hubbard's title tune, a jazz waltz (with Abbey Lincoln lyrics) which was a crowd pleaser, and Ellington's "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'," singing the Peggy Lee lyrics with great sarcasm so that you knew it wasn't really trout that she was fishing for! Conklin's sense of humor is contagious, and you can't keep your eyes off her. You won't hear many wrist-slashing torch songs from her, for love is too dangerous a proposition for her, and she treats it with suspicion and mistrust she said, adding "It's complicated." Therefore, with Bob Dorough's "You're the Dangerous Type" she whipped it up to a fare-thee-well as if it were a statement that she had to make. Nobody can do it better, except maybe Dorough himself.

Songwriter Matt Dennis has always been dear to her heart, as she has thoroughly studied his work and put together some absolutely fascinating Dennis shows, as well as a brilliant CD "Blues for Breakfast" featuring his wonderful songs. One that particularly fit this theme, and her ideas of love, was "Spring Isn't Here Anymore," one those love-gone-wrong songs that substitute for torch songs. Sample lyric (by Dennis' wife Virginia): "How can there be flowers and sunshine when you're not around anymore." Conklin was truly in her element here.

Recently, Conklin was in Los Angeles doing shows, and she said it was the first time she had been back there since songwriter Lew Spence had passed, and she missed seeing him. In his honor she sang a fantastic rendition of his great bar song "A Wet Night and a Dry Martini" (lyric by Jerry Gladstone) that was suitably bluesy and simply perfect. Panascia's bass playing punctuated the story, especially as that olive hit the bottom of the martini glass. Lew would have been so very proud.

Another  contemporary songwriter that Conklin highlighted was Ann Hampton Callaway. "You Can't Rush Spring" was heard here with a slightly bossa nova beat, admonishing that we should not fret because "the rose will come, and the robin will appear." Spring in New York can indeed be a beautiful thing, especially when you hear Mary Foster Conklin.

~ Gregg Culling
