NYC: MARY FOSTER CONKLIN WITH "UP JUMPED SPRING"

Mary Foster Conklin returns to the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ) with her new show "Up Jumped Spring" on Saturday, April 24th, both shows at 7:30 pm. She is joined by Janice Friedman on piano, Marco Panascia on bass and Ron Vincent on drums. As the song goes, it's been a long cold lonely winter. What better way to celebrate the Spring than a program of music including songs by the Gershwins, Bob Dorough and Fran Landesman, Peggy Lee, Duke Ellington, Matt Dennis, Leonard Cohen and Bill Evans, among others. A celebrated performer on the New York jazz and cabaret scene, Ms. Conklin is a longtime vocalist with Art Lillard's 15-piece Heavenly Band, and can be heard on his recording "Reasons to Be Thankful", on Summit Records. She is a three-time MAC Award winner, a three-time Bistro Award winner, and recipient of 2007 MAC Award for Jazz Recording of the Year for her tribute to Matt Dennis, BLUES FOR BREAKFAST on Rhombus Records. Her debut recording CRAZY EYES was listed as one of the ten best CDs of 1998 by IN THEATRE Magazine. Her second CD, YOU'D BE PARADISE, was released in Fall 2001 to critical acclaim. 60 solo singers and vocal duos have been chosen to compete in the second annual "MetroStar Talent Challenge," an eight-week, jury and audience-voted elimination-round competition that begins on Monday July 13th at 7:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ). The shows, on eight consecutive Mondays, are all at 7pm. "MetroStar" is open to singers of all ages and backgrounds who have not played a major engagement at The Metropolitan Room. The grand prize-winner will win a fully produced, prime time booking at the Metropolitan Room and a professionally produced live recording of this upcoming show. METROPOLITAN ROOM NEARLY 3 YEARS OLD!

The METROPOLITAN ROOM will be celebrating its 3rd Anniversary (has it only been three years?) on Monday, May 11th. Billy Stitch, who opened the room with his show, has been booked for the 9:30 pm show. We're waiting for some kind of official press release on this. We give the folks at this venue a special salute, congratulations and a big thank you - the METROPOLITAN ROOM has been running a banner ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for nearly the entire time since it opened!

I'VE BEEN TO A MARVELOUS PARTY!

I was at a fabulous, mood-lifting show Sunday (and it had to be a really special show to get me out of the house on my "day of rest") namely Cynthia Crane's show at 4:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. I know, I've raved about this cleverly funny show before, but this performance topped them all. It was the last show of this run, and it was also Cynthia's birthday. Best of all, and most thrilling of all, was that the room was packed! And everyone had to leave their recession blues at the door on the way in. By the way, if you are only as old as you feel, then Cynthia turned 27 yesterday - Congratulations! Brava!

Spotted in the audience were such cabaret luminaries as Ed Doyle, Audrey Lavine, Phil Bond, Karen Oberlin, Shaynee Rainbolt, Barbara and Peter Leavy, Jonathan Whitton, Miles Phillips, Terese Genecco, Stephanie Cheek, Kevin McMullan and more! The show was recorded for a possible CD.

My favorite line of the show - when Cynthia described herself as a "saloon singer" was this one: "When times get tough, a caffe latte is no going to do it!" Favorite song in the show? "City of New Orleans" (I'm an old train buff). Paul Greenwood's arrangement was spot-on!

SUNDAY IS CYNTHIA'S BIRTHDAY!

It is Cynthia Crane's birthday on Sunday, March 29th and she has the last performance of the current run of her "I'm Confused, Therefor I Am" show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ) on that date at 5:00 pm. It is another delightful performance - I saw it several weeks ago - and both Daniel and I plan to be there. Cynthia's life has been filled with drama - especially these past six months - but this show is all about fun (with a particularly touching ballad that had me shouting "brava" - something that reviewers aren't supposed to do).

NYC: METROPOLITAN ROOM INAUGURATES OPEN-MIC PIANO BAR

Piano bar and open mic returns to Chelsea and THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ) on Friday & Saturday nights from 11:30 pm in the cabaret room. This Friday, David Shenton will be on the piano and Erik James takes over the keyboard on Saturdays. There is no cover, just a 2-beverage minimum.

NYC: ANY WEDNESDAY FEATURES TODD MURRAY

ANY WEDNESDAY, the free in-store concert series that features the best in cabaret, jazz and theater music takes at THE BARNES & NOBLE BOOKSTORE (66th Street and Broadway, NYC). Performances are at 6:00 pm. On Wednesday, February 11th at 6:00 pm, featured performers is Todd Murray. The handsome balladeer brings an intoxicating mixture of Stardust & Swing to our stage, in a repertoire that ranges from Jule Styne and Johnny Mercer to original works. No cover. A CORNER OF SKIE AND MARY TOO!

I want to give a special plug to Skie Ocasio' show "At Last", a benefit for BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS, to be presented on Saturday, February 7th at 9:45 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440). This handsome musical theater performer is a good friend - I gave him his very first cabaret review in 2002 when he appeared (mainly for family and friends) at DON'T TELL MAMA. He had a very bad cold that day, but in true showbiz style (and because his family was only in town that weekend) the show went on - and he was terrific. He begged me to return the following week when the cold was over, and it was even better. The weather should be good, so I hope to catch another friend's show (Mary Foster Conklin) at the METROPOLITAN ROOM at 7:30 and then catch a "corner of Skie" at 9:45 pm.

GETTING BACK IN THE GROOVE

I made it to one show last night - PAT & BOOTH at THE DUPLEX - and it was "just what the doctor ordered": plenty of good times. I'll be including a review of this show in Monday's issue of the newsletter. From my house it is easy to get to THE DUPLEX - I take the #8 bus that stops on the corner of Avenue D and 10th Street (just a few steps from my front door) and go cross town on 10th to Avenue A where it makes a turn at Tompkins Square Park and then turns on 9th Street straight across to Sixth Ave where it makes an angle turn down Christopher Street and I get off at the corner of Waverly Street, 1/2 block from the club. This is the only regular cabaret club in town I can get to without a transfer - and can get to (traffic permitting) in less than 1/2 hour. And the ride is like being on a tour bus - right through the East Village, the "Middle Village" and the West Village (it goes all the way from river to river practically). Best of all, as a senior it only costs me a buck! Sad news is that the MTA is considering discontinuing this line - forcing me to take the #14 bus crosstown on 14th Street and then transferring downtown at 6th (F train) or 7th (#1 train or a bus) to Christopher Street. But that will be a ways off.

Tonight I want to catch 2 shows if I can - the first one still to be decided and the second one at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - the new vocal group The Delivery Girls at 9:45 pm. I heard these gals twice already, both times at Grace Cosgrove's GRACE NOTES shows at DON'T TELL MAMA - its about time we get a swinging all-gal pop group in town! Tracy Stark does all the arrangements with her usual pizzaz, and sings along too. I'll let you know tomorrow if I make it to the show.
