Tommy Femia, the 7-time MAC Award-winning impersonator, returns for more of his 20th season at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) with his acclaimed portrayal of the legendary Judy Garland in "JUDY GARLAND LIVE!" with two shows a month, every other Saturday at 8:30 pm. Miss Garland's guests for Saturday, April 24th TBA. Mr. Femia took a recent break from his MAMA shows to perform in the role of Norma in a parody of Sunset Boulevard at the Abingdon Theatre on West 36th Street. Christopher Denny and David Maiocco serve as musical directors. Tommy Femia made his Off Broadway debut in The New American at The Nat Horne Theatre, and toured the country, as Linus in You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. In Bucks County he appeared as Tallulah Bankhead in the musical Tallulah! and in New York City as Bette Davis in A Very Bette Christmas. He also starred in the hit Off Broadway production of the Drama Desk Award-winning Whoop-Dee-Doo! at the Actors' Playhouse, and starred as Judy Garland in the one-man show I Will Come Back at The Players Theatre. CABARET REVIEW: MARIKA AUBREY at DON'T TELL MAMA

On Tuesday, April 20th, I was back at DON'T TELL MAMA for the NYC debut (perhaps even the USA debut) of Australian performer Marika Aubrey. Auburn-haired Ms. Aubrey was born in a small town in Australia about 90 miles north of Sydney, called Redhead. Redhead was the name of her show, which highlighted some of the famous redheads of the Broadway musical theater history - Rita Hayworth, Gwen Verdon, Ethel Merman, Lucille Ball and more. I will simply say, the performance (including the arrangements by fellow Aussie Geoffrey Castles) was without a flaw! For a full hour Ms. Aubrey kept everyone enthralled with her sparkling stories, exciting movement, and most of all, her fantastic Broadway belt (she actually did a Merman song without microphone). Direction was by another Australian cabaret star, Hayden Tee. With just the right balance of information and song, the show could very nearly called "cabaret perfection." Several times I had to restrain myself from shouting "Brava" (OK, I did break the reviewer's code of silence once, but I couldn't help it). A big thank you from the person in Australia who clued me in to this show - there was very little advance press, and I had never received a release or notice beyond the one-line entry on the DON'T TELL MAMA schedule. I truly hope that Ms. Aubrey will return soon!

CABARET REVIEW: MARISSA MULDER at DON'T TELL MAMA

On Monday night, April 19th, at the urging of the director of the show, Karen Oberlin, I went to the cabaret debut of Marissa Mulder at DON'T TELL MAMA called Lost & Found" and subtitled "A Determined, If Ditsy, Cabaret Debut." The show included many of the standards we often hear in cabaret (Route 66, Another Hundred People, Moon River, I Enjoy Being a Girl) from familiar composers. But they were delivered with a freshness that kept my attention throughout. A triplet of Sentimental Journey, It's Only a Paper Moon and Moon River, most artfully arranged by musical director Tracy Stark, was sort of the centerpiece of the show, but each song in the 17-song set exhibited another facet of Ms. Mulder's abilities - ballad to belt. The room was packed with fans and family, and it was a thrill to see so many new/young faces, perhaps many attending a cabaret show for the first time. My only quibble was that the patter seemed to be a little long in spots - sometimes straying a bit from the concept of the song being introduced. But, for a "first time out", this show was a great introduction to a talented vocalist.

DON'T TELL MAMA is at the heart of New York Cabaret and the New York Theater district, the perfect location to celebrate the music of Broadway and film. Established in 1982, this venue carries on offering the joyous combination of live music, comedy and fine dining that epitomizes the best of New York Nightlife. After 27 years in the business, there is now even more cause for celebration!

The new series features the talents of the new restaurant, cabaret and piano bar staff and will be hosted by Dave Foley, Jr. & Mike Kirk with Joe Regan and Nate Buccieri at the piano.The weekly "Our Way, Your Way, Broadway!" events will be held in the larger, original cabaret room at the club. CABARET NOIR? YES - AT DON'T TELL MAMA TONIGHT

Cabaret legend Steve Hayes, along with Tom Cayler, makes a rare cabaret appearance at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ) in a new comedy in one act for two actors called "Stories We Tell Ourselves." Performances are scheduled for Mondays, May 25th and June 1st & 8th, both shows at 7:00 pm. The comedy portrays a dipso with a secret who meets a "9 o'clock gay with a 12 o'clock past. Its a "film noir sendup" where men are men and women are more so. There is an $8 cover with a 2-drink minimum. Mr. Hayes is one of the most creative folks in cabaret - from the Bruce Hopkins-Helene Kelly era - the true golden age of cabaret.

TAKING BACK THE STREETS

On the way home from DON'T TELL MAMA last night - after attending a farewell party for Michael Edelstein celebrating his relocation to Florida after 33 years in NYC and 18 years at the piano in the piano bar at MAMA'S - they were putting up the barricades to close off part of Broadway and part of Seventh Avenue between 47th St. and 42nd St. in TIMES SQUARE to create a huge pedestrian mall - all traffic will now have to use the other side of the square. The tourists looked bewildered and the locals seemed ecstatic (except for the taxi cab drivers).

So I was at 4 parties yesterday: the annual LOISAIDA FESTIVAL on Avenue C, then salsa (both the sauce & dance) party in Jackson Heights, then Michael's farewell at MAMA'S and finally "Take Back the Streets" in TIMES SQUARE.

What a day - what a night!
