NYC: HILARY GARDNER CD RELEASE AT BIRDLAND

Acclaimed singer Hilary Gardner celebrates the release of her new CD 'Hilary Gardner: The Good City' at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sunday, October 5th at 6:00 pm. Gardner grew up in Wasilla, Alaska infatuated with New York City. The city came to life through the jazz and American songbook albums in her parents' record collection. Hilary made her Broadway debut in 2010. Her stunning recording debut, The Great City, is part love letter, part lament to New York and the big dreams it represents. Hilary went from waiting tables to making her Broadway debut in two-time Tony-award winner Twyla Tharp's hit musical, Come Fly Away. Backed by a 19-piece big band, Hilary sang solos and duets with Frank Sinatra in a performance hailed by the critics. She is a frequent soloist with symphonies throughout the United States and has appeared with Connecticut's Ridgefield Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and New York's Rochester Philharmonic. She performs regularly as a featured vocalist with the George Gee Swing Orchestra, and she's a founding member of Shotgun Wedding, a Brooklyn-based country music band. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: KURT ELLING AT BIRDLAND

Grammy Award winning Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday through Sunday, October 2nd through 5th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Elling is a baritone with a four-octave range, and a writer and performer of vocalese, the art of writing and performing words over improvised jazz solos. Elling began to perform around Chicago, scat singing and improvising his own lyrics. He recorded a demo in the early 1990s and was signed by Blue Note Records, releasing a total of six albums with the label. He has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards, winning Best Vocal Jazz Album for Dedicated to You (2009) on the Concord Jazz label. There is a $45 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: CHICK COREA & THE VIGIL AT THE BLUE NOTE

NEA Jazz Master, 20-time Grammy winner, prolific composer and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea, returns to THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, September 30th through October 5th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Corea has attained living legend status after four decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering. From straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children's songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is awe-inspiring. A tirelessly creative spirit, Chick continues to forge ahead, continually reinventing himself in the process. There is a $45-$65 cover.

NYC: MATT WILSON 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT DIZZY'S

Matt Wilson celebrates his 50th Birthday at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, October 2nd through 5th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Matt Wilson is a phenomenal drummer who has played with, and been praised by, a seemingly endless list of contemporary jazz greats. In addition to his instrumental skills, he receives constant praise as a bandleader and a creative force who experiments and pushes both sidemen and genre boundaries alike, while remaining widely accessible in every context. Funnily enough, the simple - albeit far too rare - element that elevates Wilson's performances (and you'd be hard pressed to find a concert or record review that doesn't mention this), is his obvious and unadulterated joy. Wilson's sense of humor, tireless smile, and spirited energy acts as the catalyst to everyone onstage and off feeling good and having FUN. So whether you're feeling great, feeling down, or anything in between, make sure you don't miss out! These sets celebrating Wilson's 50th birthday are going to lift your spirits. The nightly sets feature the appropriately colorful music of his Arts & Crafts quartet. There is a $40 cover.
