NYC: LOUISA, REQUESTED AT 54 BELOW
Louisa, Requested, a musical cabaret revue show with a twist: it's all improvised, will be presented at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Saturday, August 15th at 10:00 pm. Louisa, a semi-washed up Broadway diva, is back in her old stomping ground for one night. Singing through her "repertoire" of original, legendary show tunes and ballads, Louisa will lead the audience through a (totally improvised) journey of her monumental career. Lulu Krause is delighted to be returning to 54 Below, after making her debut there this past winter. A former member of ComedySportz Philly, Lulu has been performing both straight and musical improv for five years. Her work has been seen at Dixon Place, The Duplex, the PIT, and The Magnet - where you can catch her performing musical improv every Tuesday night. She was recently nominated for a "My Favorite Child Award" by her mother, but lost (humbly) to her brother, who received his PhD in Math at age 25. Frank Spitznagel is the Musical Director at Magnet Theater and a piano accompanist who frequently plays for such improv groups as I Eat Pandas, Veal, The Made-Up Musical, Gusto, and many others. He is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano performance. His work can be heard on several studio recordings. Frank has composed for Comedy Central and the Aspen Comedy Festival. He accompanied Itzhak Perlman in an original jazz composition by Benny Golson at Lincoln Center. He also played the American premiere of The Hired Man Off-Broadway. He has been musical director for productions such as Nunsense (all incarnations), A Chorus Line, Chicago City Limits, and several original musicals. There is a $10-$25 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.
Tuelo & Her Cousins, a New York City-based band who share a kindred love for music that rocks the soul, will perform at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Saturday, August 15th at 7:00 pm. Formed by singer/ songwriter Tuelo Minah in 2013, the band continually play to packed houses at some of New York's most famed institutions including Rockwood, The Apollo Music Cafe, and Lincoln Center. Their unique take on rock and roll combines driving beats and catchy hooks with Tswana-Bushmen rhythms to tell dreamlike tales of struggle and triumph. No matter where they play, the cousins always get audiences singing, clapping, and shaking their bones to the call of Tuelo's booming voice. There is a $15 cover.
Dan Finnerty & The Dan Band perform at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Saturday, August 15th at 9:30 pm. Dan Finnerty caught America's attention as the foul-mouthed wedding singer in the box-office smash Old School, performing his now-infamous rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart, as well as his appearance as the sleazy bat-mitzvah singer in Starsky & Hutch and again as the inappropriate wedding singer in the record breaking hit The Hangover. What started as a drunken joke for Finnerty singing I Am Woman at a karaoke bar has spiraled out of control into THE DAN BAND - a cult phenomenon that has garnered rave reviews. THE DAN BAND plays to sold out crowds from Los Angeles to New York and has appeared on numerous shows including The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ellen, The Late Late Show, Last Call with Carson Daly, Last Comic Standing, The Guys Choice Awards and caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who signed on to executive produce Dan's one hour concert special "The Dan Band: I Am Woman," directed by McG. Finnerty, who was also a recurring correspondent on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and former member of the group STOMP, has released two CDs, "THE DAN BAND LIVE" followed by "HO - A DAN BAND CHRISTMAS," and is currently working on a third for Comedy Central Records called "The Wedding Album." There is a $20 cover.
