NYC: ALPHA REV UNPLUGGED / JARED & THE MILL AT JOE'S PUB
Singer-songwriter Casey McPherson of Alpha Rev performs at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555) on Thursday, August 13th at 7:00 pm. Following the Triple A Radio success of New Morning (2010), the band's third album Bloom (2013) is a set of personally transformative and redemptive songs, born in the spirit of creative expansion, and a mandate to blossom and grow. Rooted in lyrical wisdom, the more recent addition of drummer Tabber Millard - trained by master percussionists - is credited for the band's contemporary tribal rhythms. Newest Alpha Rev addition Jeff Bryant rounds out the band, playing pedal steel, piano, organ, and bass. With a glistening rock sound that is at once fragile and tough, Bloom picks up threads from the past while it takes a big bite into the eternal here and now. Drawing from the wellspring of American history, the grandeur of its landscape, and life's sweet and tragic mysteries, McPherson leans into his personal challenges as well as the wages of the 21st Century and emerges with a triumphant statement on the ways in which music can serve as a constant source of strength and inspiration. There is a $15 cover.
NYC: BROWN GIRLS BURLESQUE PRESENTS BETTY'S STORY AT JOE'S PUB
Betty's Story is a multimedia musical tribute to Betty Mabry Davis - ex-wife and muse of Miles Davis, contemporary of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, and innovator of jazz funk fusion. It will be presented at JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555 ) on Thursday, August 13th at 9:30 pm. Raunchy, raw, outrageous, Betty was decades ahead of her time in the early '70s, when she released three critically acclaimed albums steeped in sexual energy, in your face takes on love, power, and gender roles. She disappeared from the music scene in the mid-'70s her musical and stylistic influence are evident in Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album and in the work of artists like Madonna and Prince. Nucomme tells Betty's Story through live musical performance, dance, radio interviews and photos. Texas-Born Vocalist, Singer/ Songwriter, Guitarist, arranger, producer, poet and actress, Nucomme has been building a buzz since 2004 performing internationally and sharing the stage alongside artist such as Tamar Kali, Joi, Kymberli Nicole, Greg Tate, The Black Rock Coalition and many other Soul, Jazz and contemporary artists. Nucomme's desire to study the musical soundscapes and history is what led her to New York City. Like many artists her Classical studies at Hunter College was just the taste she needed to continue to explore NYC. She met Greg Tate of Burnt Sugar Arkestra when she lived in Harlem he introduced her to the heartbeat of the NYC music scene. From there she pieced together a revolving door of musicians she calls The Curators, she wrote and produced her first album "Hologram". Since 2010 Nucomme has been introducing new audiences to Betty's Story: a living legend many had forgotten existed or thought was dead. Betty's Story has gained attention and support from fans worldwide and sold out the world famous Apollo and Brooklyn Museum. Brown Girls Burlesque's mission is to Entertain, Titillate, Educate and Liberate! Through theatrical and cabaret burlesque shows in in cities like New York, Washington, DC, Philadelphia and in university lecture halls BGB creates platforms for artistic expression that empower women of color and bring scintillating entertainment to all who behold their witty and diverse shows.
