SAN DIEGO, CA: SHERRY WILLIAMS IN "JUST US TWO"
Jazz performer Williams and her longtime friend/ accompanist John Rodby will share tunes featured on their CD at MARTINI'S ABOVE FOURTH (3940 4th Avenue, San Diego, CA - 619-400-4500) on Thursday, February 19th at 8:00 pm. Together they've done everything from big band and full orchestra gigs to duo settings. They'll be doing material from their latest CD, called "Just Us Two" which is a collection of songs they both love with some quirky arrangements. Sherry Williams' buttery voice is an oasis in any madness our world offers. When you listen to her you realize immediately that she is a consummate artist - the real thing. Williams is what they called in the old days, a storyteller - she paints pictures with words. Yet she bridges the gap between the past and the present. Her masterful interpretation of the lyrics makes an over worn song meaningful, or brings an unknown song to life. Her passion for well crafted music and her superb vocal ability place her in a category to which few artists have arrived. Though she emerges from the shadows of the great ladies that have gone on before her, her style is unmistakably her own. Since she began singing as a professional, Sherry has had the good fortune to rarely be out of work. When she was a high school student in San Bernardino (California), she sang and toured with The Young Americans. At ULCA, she joined the acapella choir and worked with the famous Roger Wagner and the UCLA Choir both in Los Angeles and Europe. She has also toured with Debbie Reynolds, Andy Gibb, and the legendary Johnnie Ray, to name a few. In 1976, Sherry left the Eddie Kendricks tour and struck out on her own, touring Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok. Sherry has worked with a multitude of jazz greats including Buddy Collette, Herbie Mann, Plas Johnson, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Ann Patterson, Gerald "Wig" Wiggins, Al Viola, Herman Riley, Dave Pike, Eddie Cano, Lanny Morgan, Ross Tompkins, Earl Palmer, Bill Cunliffe, Andy Simpkins, Roy McCurdy, John and Jennifer Leitham, Ray Pizzi, Jim DeJulio, Paul Smith, Art Hillery, Terry Harrington, John Hammond, Roger Kellaway, Dave Benoit, Llew Matthews, John B. Williams, Tom Ranier, Patrice Rushen, Ralph Penland, Bob Magnusson, Joe LaBarbera, Jon Mayer, Putter Smith & many more. There is a $20 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
