NYC: MICHAEL FEINSTEIN "HAPPY HOLIDAYS: SWINGING WITH THE BIG BAND"
Backed by a 17-piece big band, legendary performer, vocalist, pianist and scholar of American popular song, Michael Feinstein, kicks off a year-long, global, centennial celebration of Frank Sinatra with a program of Ol' Blue Eyes favorite standards from the great American songbook at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesdays through Saturdays, December 16th through December 27th at 8:30 pm with additional shows on Fridays & Saturdays at 11:00 pm. Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum-selling, two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award-nominated entertainer dubbed "The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook," is considered one of the premier interpreters of American standards. His 200-plus shows a year have included performances at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as the White House and Buckingham Palace. Feinstein is more than simply a performer. He has received national recognition for his commitment to celebrating America's popular song and preserving its' legacy for the generations to come. In 2007, he founded the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, Master Classes, and the annual High School Vocal Academy and Competition, which awards scholarships and prizes to students across the country. Michael serves on the Library of Congress' National Recording Preservation Board, an organization dedicated to ensuring the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America's sound recording heritage. He also serves as Artistic Director of the Palladium Center for the Performing Arts, a $170 million, three-theatre venue in Carmel, Indiana, which opened in January 2011. Furthermore, starting in 2010, he became the director of the Jazz and Popular Song Series at New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center and in 2013, he replaced the late Marvin Hamlisch as the lead conductor of the Pasadena Pops. There is a $60-$250 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: CHRIS BOTTI - 10TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY RESIDENCY
THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) is proud to present world renowned trumpeter Chris Botti's milestone, highly anticipated 10th Annual Holiday Residency - a three week engagement from Mondays through Sundays, December 15th, 2014 through Sunday, January 4th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm (including Christmas and New Year's Eve). Botti has called the club his home every December since 2005. Over the years the residency Chris has featured special impromptu musical guests, such as Sting and John Mayer (2011). Celebrities from all walks of the entertainment business have attended Botti's Blue Note performances, ranging from Mary J Blige to Paul Haggis. Since the release of his 2004 critically acclaimed CD "When I Fall In Love," Chris Botti has become the largest-selling American instrumental artist. His success has crossed over to audiences usually reserved for pop muisc and his ongoing association with PBS has led to four #1 jazz albums, as well as multiple Gold, Platinum and Grammy Awards. Most recently, his latest album Impressions won the GRAMMY for Best Pop Instrumental Album at the 2013 55th GRAMMY Awards. Performing worldwide and selling more than four million albums, he has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre. There is a $40-$75 cover.
