NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH AT THE HOURGLASS TAVERN
Sunday Jazz Brunch, Featuring Jaye Maynard (vocals), Jon Delfin (musical direction/piano), Leon Lee Dorsey (upright bass) and Vin Scialla (drums) will take place at THE HOURGLASS TAVERN (373 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-265-2060) on Sundays, November 23rd; and December 21st at 12:30 pm - performance at 2:00 pm. At the Hour Glass, Delfin will accompany Maynard on Blossom Derie's last apartment piano, which Jaye discovered and purchased on Ebay, after Dearie had bequeathed it to the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets). Maynard is now representing the posthumously published "Blossom Dearie Songbook" for Hal Leonard Music. Maynard styles her show as a mid-Century modern NYC supper club act ala 1962. Known throughout the world as "a musician's musician," Dearie was a unique and inimitable singer; sophisticated and genuinely funny, whose legacy of material remains fresh, hip, smart and sassy. NYC: DIZZY GILLESPIE ALL-STARS - FALL SUNDAY BRUNCH RESIDENCY
THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) presents the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars for a special Fall Sunday Brunch Residency. The band will perform brunch shows every Sunday with performances at 11:30 am & 1:30 pm, through December 28th. History has produced its share of great artists and great people - legendary jazz trumpeter John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. Officially authorized by Lorraine Gillespie, and under the leadership of Dizzy's long-time bassist John Lee, a selection of ensembles of varying sizes were formed, featuring many of the wide variety of musicians who worked with Dizzy plus some newer talents from the jazz scene. Together they are working to continue the legacy of both the music and the personality of this great jazz master who had such a profound impact on twentieth century music. NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH WITH GABRIELLE STRAVELLI
Bistro Award winning vocalist, Gabrielle Stravelli, returns with her Sunday Jazz Brunch on August 11th at LE PESCADEUX (90 Thompson Street, NYC - 212-966-0021), a French restaurant in the heart of Soho. They will play three sets from 12:30 to 4:00 pm. She will be joined by Saul Rubin on guitar and Pat O'Leary on bass in this charming boite that offers a great, well-priced menu and cozy atmosphere. TORONTO: JAZZ BISTRO BRUNCH WITH AUCOIN, DAVIDSON & SAMARAS
Ghislain Aucoin, Charlie Davidson And Alex Samaras join in song to entertain at THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, November 23rd at 12 noon as part of the club's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. From Bach to Sondheim, Handel to Lloyd Webber, Charles Davidson brings a dynamic stage presence and exciting tenor voice to the stage. He also is also at home singing the Noel Coward Songbook, standards and songs from " Grand Hotel", "La Cage aux Folles" or "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" in which he played the lead. Alex Samaras is quickly becoming one of Canada's leading vocalists in the jazz and new music scene. Alex studied vocal performance in the jazz program at the University of Toronto and at the Banff Center's Creative Music Program. He also spent time working in New York City with contemporary arts icon Meredith Monk and her vocal ensemble. There is a $20 cover.
