TORONTO: A SONDHEIM JAZZ PROJECT AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

A Sondheim Jazz Project performs at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299 ) on Sunday, September 28th at 7:00 pm. City of Strangers, the debut album by A Sondheim Jazz Project, takes on no less a task than rebuilding the lost bond between Broadway and modern jazz. Its leader, Bobby Hsu has set the beautiful melodies of Broadway's great master - Stephen Sondheim - to the compositional language of Wayne Shorter, Terence Blanchard and others while maintaining a deep respect for the dramatic and emotional heart of Sondheim's stunning lyrics. Singer Alex Samaras strikes a balance between perfectly placed jazz phrasing, tasteful improvisation, and something often neglected in jazz: a dynamic performance of the lyrics as story and character. A voice instructor in the jazz performance programs at both the University of Toronto and Humber College, Alex's singing is in demand by projects as varied as the Bicycle Opera tour, the Global Cabaret Festival at the Young Centre, and the Toronto Jazz Orchestra's Radiohead project. He has performed with Marvin Hamlisch, the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble, the Tiny Alligator Orchestra, his own vocal ensemble GREX, and at various jazz and cabaret venues singing forgotten gems from the American songbook. As sidemen, ASJP's rhythm section—D'Arcy Myronuk (piano), James McEleney (bass) and Morgan Childs (drums)—have collectively accumulated one Juno nomination (2013) and two Grand Prix de Jazz (2009, 2012) awards at the TD Montreal jazz festival. Despite brief existence, A Sondheim Jazz Project is pleased to have built a devoted following which unites two communities not often seen in the same audience since the days of Jerome Kern and Cole Porter. There is a $15 cover.
