BOSTON: RYAN KEBERLE & CATHARSIS FEATURING CAMILA MEZA

Ryan Keberle & Catharsis will appear at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, October 1st at 7:30 pm. Few musicians have managed to navigate the richly varied avenues of New York City's abundant music scene with the same passion and adaptability as trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle. Keberle's diverse talents have earned him a place alongside a staggering array of legends, superstars, and up-and-coming innovators. That includes playing with jazz greats Maria Schneider, Rufus Reid and Wynton Marsalis; hip-hop and R&B superstars like Philip Phillips and Alicia Keys; Latin jazz leaders like Miguel Zenon and Ivan Lins; indie rock ground-breakers such as Sufjan Stevens; or playing in the house band at Saturday Night Live, on the soundtrack of a Woody Allen film, or in the pit for a Tony-winning Broadway musical. Early 2012 marked the debut of Keberle's latest group, the pianoless quartet Catharsis, comprising some of the music's most compelling young voices: Mike Rodriguez (trumpet), Jorge Roeder (bass), and Eric Doob (drums). In September of 2014 Ryan Keberle & Catharsis released their sophomore record, Into the Zone, on the critically acclaimed record label, Greenleaf Music. For this record, their most expressive and personal musical output to date, and all upcoming engagements, Keberle has added the wonderful Chilean vocalist, Camila Meza. There is a $20 cover.

TORONTO: MELISSA LAUREN QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

Jazz singer Melissa Lauren will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Wednesday, October 1st at 8:00 pm. Melissa has smoothly made the transition from veteran swing "crooness" to songwriter. With a strong influence in jazz and blues, Melissa has developed an original style of her own melting together old school sounds with modern flare. Currently in the studio recording songs for her sophomore album, she will be touring her show, "My Mess" in the Spring of 2014. Melissa's debut album, "The Other Side", was released in March 2012 to great reviews. A collection of original compositions, the music was produced by Eric St-Laurent, paying tribute to the jazz and swing sounds that shaped the singer's musical style. Quickly making a place for itself on Canadian charts, the album offers a variety of classic sounds, mixed with modern pop sensibilities. For the upcoming album, Melissa collaborated songwriting and producing efforts with Toronto bassist Mark Cashion, and guitarist Eric St-Laurent, and the outcome is a quirky, more playful sound that tests an interesting balance of darker harmonies and more theatrical grooves, coupled with the singer's signature soft and feminine word inflections. Call for cover/minimum information.
