NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, September 9th, 20th & 27th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: KARRIN ALLYSON AT BIRDLAND

Multiple Grammy nominated singer and pianist Karrin Allyson will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, November 11th through 15th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Karrin has become known for the wide range of material she explores, always striving to find new ways of singing a story. For this engagement, Karrin and band set out to play new original music as well as re-making some favorites, surrounded by the soulful, sustaining sound of the classic organ trio• with some twists. Joining her are co-writer Chris Caswell on Hammond B-3 organ, long-time musical partner & guitarist Rod Fleeman, and fiery drummer extraordinaire Adam Cruz. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: SEU JORGE AT THE BLUE NOTE

Brazilian singer-songwriter/ actor Seu Jorge performs at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday through Sunday, November 10th through 16th (except Thursday the 13th) with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Seu became an international star after his performance as Knockout Ned in the Oscar-nominated City of God and his work in the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou in 2004. In the latter, heplayed a sailor who sang solo acoustic versions of David Bowie classics in Portuguese. Of course there has been a wealth of Seu Jorge original compositions as well. A kid from the favelas who taught himself to play guitar and several other instruments, Jorge is a singular talent of rare quality. His warm husky baritone is instantly recognizable but nonetheless flexible enough for samba, reggae, pop, electronic and other influences that find their way into his music. There is a $50-$75 cover.
