NYC: MIDTOWN JAZZ AT MIDDAY: FRANK PEROWSKY BIG BAND

MIDTOWN JAZZ AT MIDDAY continues at ST. PETER'S CHURCH - SANCTUARY (619 Lexington Avenue, NYC - 212-935-2200) every Wednesday. This long-running series was created by Edmund Anderson and is now produced by Ronny Whyte. The show on Wednesday,November 12th features The Frank Perowsky Big Band. New York City based saxophonist and clarinetist Frank Perowsky has toured or performed with such artists as Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, and Stan Getz. Performances are at 1:00 pm, $10 donation.

NYC: THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND

The Louis Armstrong Centennial Band aka David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band performs at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/ vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more! There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: KARRIN ALLYSON AT BIRDLAND

Multiple Grammy nominated singer and pianist Karrin Allyson will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, November 11th through 15th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Karrin has become known for the wide range of material she explores, always striving to find new ways of singing a story. For this engagement, Karrin and band set out to play new original music as well as re-making some favorites, surrounded by the soulful, sustaining sound of the classic organ trio• with some twists. Joining her are co-writer Chris Caswell on Hammond B-3 organ, long-time musical partner & guitarist Rod Fleeman, and fiery drummer extraordinaire Adam Cruz. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: SEU JORGE AT THE BLUE NOTE

Brazilian singer-songwriter/ actor Seu Jorge performs at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday through Sunday, November 10th through 16th (except Thursday the 13th) with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Seu became an international star after his performance as Knockout Ned in the Oscar-nominated City of God and his work in the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou in 2004. In the latter, heplayed a sailor who sang solo acoustic versions of David Bowie classics in Portuguese. Of course there has been a wealth of Seu Jorge original compositions as well. A kid from the favelas who taught himself to play guitar and several other instruments, Jorge is a singular talent of rare quality. His warm husky baritone is instantly recognizable but nonetheless flexible enough for samba, reggae, pop, electronic and other influences that find their way into his music. There is a $50-$75 cover. 

NYC: EXPANSIONS: DAVE LIEBMAN QUINTET AT DIZZY'S

After over two decades' worth of Dave Liebman Group performances across the world (and nearly twenty CDs), the poll-topping saxophonist Liebman has put together an exciting new band with Dave Liebman, soprano saxophone and flute; Bobby Avey, electric and acoustic piano; Matt Vashlishan, alto saxophone, clarinet, and flute; Tony Marino, electric and acoustic bass; Alex Ritz, drums and percussion. They will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Monday through Wedenesday, November 10th through 12th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Fitting in with jazz tradition and honoring Miles Davis and Elvin Jones, who mentored Liebman in the 1970s the group extends across generations and allows every member to both teach and learn from one another. The repertoire traverses elements of free jazz, in addition to rearrangements of jazz standards, infused with complex time signatures and harmonies popular with many of today's younger jazz leaders. There is a $30 cover.
