NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, September 9th, 20th & 27th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: RALPH ALESSI BAIDA QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

Born in San Francisco, the son of classical trumpeter Joe Alessi and opera singer Maria Leone, Alessi studied under the legendary Charlie Haden at CalArts before moving to NYC where he became an ubiquitous presence on the downtown scene. A frequent collaborator with such notables as Steve Coleman, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane and Fred Hersch, Alessi has also recorded seven albums as a leader including the critically acclaimed "Baida" (Quartet) on ECM Records. As an educator, Alessi has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and is currently the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music. Since 2002, he has been on the jazz faculty at New York University. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Ever since his breakthrough in the early 1970s as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and as a drummer/leader whose recordings (such as Spectrum) and powerful, complex style of play exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion-Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musical explorer. In 2014, Cobham will release a live CD recording from last years' celebrated Spectrum 40 tours, which dazzled audiences around the world in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Spectrum CD, the defining album of the jazz-fusion genre.
