LOS ANGELES: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VOCAL COLLECTIVE At THE GARDENIA

The SoCal/L.A. Vocal Collective will perform at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Wednesday, September 24th at 9:00 pm. Organizer Dolores Petersen formed the SoCal/L.A. Vocal Collective over three years ago to support the works of performing vocalists in the region. Its membership has  grown rapidly and now includes over 100 singers. Selected individuals from this phenomenal group offer great tunes, with hits from a variety of genres going as far back as the '20's.

SAN FRANCISCO: MARK TURNER QUARTET AT YOSHI'S

Mark Turner will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600 - ) on Wednesday, September 24th at 8:00 pm. Mark Turner is one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, renowned for his exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the full range of the tenor. This is his ECM leader debut, following albums for the label in the cooperative trio Fly with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, and appearances on key recordings by Billy Hart, Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani. Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining in serpentine fashion with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen. They play long, introspective lines of hypnotic grace; and with the lithe rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Justin Brown, there is subtle volatility in the air. There is a $20 cover.
