NYC: DAVE DOUGLAS QUINTET AT BIRDLAND

Hailing down from the NYC area, American jazz trumpeter and composer, Dave Douglas will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street d, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, August 19th through 23rd with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. He is joined by Jon Irabagon (sax), Matt Mitchell (piano), Linda Oh (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums). Douglas' unique repertoire and style speaks for itself. Since 1993, Douglas has recorded more than forty albums as a bandleader. With his own groups, Douglas has pioneered new settings for the trumpet in jazz. He has produced and recorded countless artists and groups, including all albums released by his independent label Greenleaf Music. Douglas has performed and recorded with dozens of musicians in jazz and has been a member of the SFJAZZ Collective and various John Zorn ensembles. In more recent years, he has explored collaborations involving modern dance, spoken word/poetry, and film. Douglas served as the artistic director of the Banff Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music from 2002 - 2012 and is the co-founder of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, a non-profit charity that supports new and pioneering trumpet workshops across genres, genders and communities and is held annually in New York City. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE LATIN SIDE OF HORACE SILVER: CONRAD HERWIG & THE LATIN SIDE ALL-STARS

THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) welcomes back trombonist Conrad Herwig with 'The Latin Side Of Horace Silver' on Tuesday through Sunday, August 19th through 24th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. His special guest is Michel Camilo. The program - the seventh iteration of his "Latin Side" franchise, spotlights the music of jazz legend Horace Silver (who recently passed away in June 2014). The project will be recorded live each night and later released on Half Note Records in 2015. Since 1998, Herwig's "Latin Side" franchise has been focused on reimagining seminal jazz musicians' compositions by showcasing those compositions within the framework of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Past projects include the GRAMMY nominated The Latin Side of John Coltrane, Another Kind of Blue - The Latin Side of Miles Davis, and The Latin Side of Wayne Shorter, as well as Sketches of Spain y Mas and The Latin Side of Herbie Hancock. Many of these albums have featured various special guests, ranging from Eddie Palmieri and Randy Brecker to Paquito D'Rivera and Dave Valentin. All of the albums have been released on Half Note Records. Herwig's latest "Latin Side" release, The Latin Side of Joe Henderson featuring Joe Lovano, is scheduled for September 16th release on Half Note. One of the most in-demand jazz educators, Conrad Herwig is a Conn-Selmer clinician and performs exclusively on Bach Stradivarius trombones. A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Camilo's musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Republic musical heritage and a rich, intelligent use of jazz harmonies and textures.
