NYC: PETER ELDRIDGE WITH SPECIAL GUEST JANE MONHEIT

They began their relationship as student and teacher years ago, but have since become musical peers and wonderful friends who love singing together when schedules allow. They have also joined forces on a number of each other's recording projects, but this Birdland outing will be their very first full set together; two jazz vocalists at the top of their game, performing songs from their respective catalogues as well as new arrangements conceived specifically for this special evening. Jazz vocalist Jane Monheit recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of her remarkable recording career with her most mature, heartfelt album yet, Home, a collection of standards that represents a passionate return to her roots as a jazz musician. Peter Eldridge continues to draw on his many-faceted talent as he pursues an eclectic mix of activities, including composing, performing, arranging, recording, as well as teaching (the Manhattan School of Music, head of the jazz voice faculty since 1993). He has released three solo recordings: Stranger in Town, characterized by its bittersweet swing and called the Best Jazz CD of 2001 by Boston radio station WICN; Fool No More, full of Peter's original compositions in a sophisticated pop style, released in the same year (both on the independent label Rosebud Records); and Decorum, a 2005 release of originals. Peter's newest project, the latin-inspired Mad Heaven, was just released this February on Palmetto Records. There is a $40-$45 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: DIZZY GILLESPIE'S 96TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Dizzy Gillespie's 96th Birthday Celebration, featuring Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath & More will be presented atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday through Sunday, October 21st through 27th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. History has produced its share of great artists and great people John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration. As a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces, and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Alumni All-Star group is the direct descendant of these ventures, and happily, the tradition lives on, nurtured by Gillespie alumni and executive director, producer, and bassist John Lee. The Alumni All-Stars feature some of Dizzy's closest compatriots: senior statesmen and NEA Jazz Master James Moody and veteran Gillespie alumni Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, Willie Jones III, and musical director John Lee. All of them are band leaders, educators, and recording artists in their own right. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO AT DIZZY'S

The Christian McBride Trio (Christian McBride, bass; Christian Sands, piano; and Ulysses Owens, Jr., drums) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Tuesday through Sunday, October 22nd through 27th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. GRAMMY Award winning bassist Christian McBride has appeared on over 300 recordings and is already considered one of the most accomplished bassists alive. After leading the Christian McBride Band and performing in the Five Peace Band with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, and Vinnie Colaiuta, McBride has channeled his energy and talent into the Christian McBride Trio. This jazz trinity, featuring Christian Sands on piano and Ulysses Owens, Jr. on drums, is rooted in the simplicity of storytelling through bluesy, straight-ahead jazz, with undertones of R&B and soul. Their raw and acoustic sound pays utmost respect to the "story" of the music, focused on earnest interpretations of tunes that are beaming with expression and bound together with unparalleled chemistry. There is a $35-$45-Cover (depending on date).
