MARYLAND: SONGWRITING WORKSHOP WITH WHITEY JOHNSON

Gary Nicholson as Whitey Johnson will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500 - ) on Tuesday, October 22nd at 7:30 pm. Whitey Johnson is a legendary blues artist from Texas, now living in Tennessee and touring worldwide. There are many versions of Whitey's story, but one known fact is that his alternate persona known as Gary Nicholson has written songs that have been recorded by many of the greatest artists in blues and roots music including BB King, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Delbert McClinton, and so many others. He has produced two Grammy winning records for Delbert McClinton in the "Best Contemporary Blues" category. Whitey calls his music "Feel Better Blues." There is a $20 cover. Join him and the Songwriters Association of Washington for a Song Writing Workshop from 6:00 to 7:30 pm for an additional $10.

D.C.: ANTONIO CIACCA QUARTET AT BLUES ALLEY

The Antonio Ciacca Quartet will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) on Tuesday, October 22nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. A graduate of the Bologna conservatory with a degree in contemporary music, German born Italian pianist Antonio Ciacca has played with jazz legends Steve Grossman, James Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Larry Smith, Roy Brooks, Lee Konitz Art Farmer, Mark Murphy, Johnny Griffen, James Moody and Dave Liebman. Antonio was the pianist for Steve Lacy for his seven years before and has toured extensively throughout the world with jazz legend Benny Golson. With performances in venues such as Pizza express and Ronnie Scott's in London, the Blue Note in Milan, Alexander Platz in Rome, London Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival and the Village Vanguard (with Wess Anderson and Wynton Marsalis), Antonio has proven himself on the world stage.

D.C.: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: ALAN JAY PALMER

Alan Jay Palmer or BAP ( Bad Alan Palmer) will act as Artist in Residence at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800), appearing every Tuesday at 7:30 & 9:30 pm during the month of October. Palmer was born in Washington D.C. and attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Alan was exposed to Jazz piano through his first teacher John Malachi and listening to Thelonious Monk , Mingus, and John Coltrane recordings that a neighborhood friend had. At that time, Alan was beginning to play around D.C. with different Go Go bands and developing his Jazz ... chops at Lettumplay w/ Fred Foss, Webster Young and other D.C. Jazz Legends. After high school, Alan attended the famous African American Music Department at The University of Hartford now known as The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. While at the conservatory, Alan studied piano and orchestration from Jaki Byard and Hotep Galeta, and began his close mentorship with the master alto saxophonist/educator, Jackie McLean. Alan became Jackie's close disciple and assistant in Music History and Jazz Education. He was the first student ever entrusted to teach Jackie McLean's famous course "The Origin of Man and Music." During his senior year at Hartt Alan joined The Jackie McLean Quintet and toured Europe and Japan with the band. He also recorded his debut album with Jackie McLean on "Rhythm of the Earth" contributing four original compositions. A true dedicated musician, Currently Alan has now emerged as the leader of the BAP TRIO and THE NEW SOIL big bang and as a new composer in NYC. A talented actor, Alan recently performed in the Living Theatre's revival of Jack Gelber's play The Conection, also contributing new music. Alan has taught music to thousands of students and continues to conduct workshops and master-classes throughout the world. There is a $15 cover.
