NYC: JAZZ VOCALIST KURT ELLING AT BIRDLAND

2010 Grammy winner Kurt Elling will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 ) on Thursday through Saturday, October 24th through 26th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Elling is a rarity among jazz vocalists. While planning an academic career, Elling discovered jazz and took to it naturally. Deeply influenced by singer and poet, Mark Murphy, Elling began to develop his idiosyncratic scat style in the smaller clubs of Chicago. As the natural heir to jazz pioneers Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, and Jon Hendricks, Elling is the contemporary voice in vocalese. Whether it be Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, or Dexter Gordon, Elling's vocalized interpretation is flawless, and upon Blue Note's reception of Elling's demo, Close Your Eyes was released in 1995. He began to get attention from jazz press, not only for his talent and original style, but also his choice in sidemen, which include Laurence Hobgood and Paul Wertico for a time. Elling has won over jazz critics and fans alike. Kurt's 2007 release, "Nightmoves" received a Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album, and his most recent album, "Dedicated to You" earned him the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. There is a $40-$45 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: DIZZY GILLESPIE'S 96TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Dizzy Gillespie's 96th Birthday Celebration, featuring Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath & More will be presented atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday through Sunday, October 21st through 27th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. History has produced its share of great artists and great people John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration. As a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces, and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Alumni All-Star group is the direct descendant of these ventures, and happily, the tradition lives on, nurtured by Gillespie alumni and executive director, producer, and bassist John Lee. The Alumni All-Stars feature some of Dizzy's closest compatriots: senior statesmen and NEA Jazz Master James Moody and veteran Gillespie alumni Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, Willie Jones III, and musical director John Lee. All of them are band leaders, educators, and recording artists in their own right. There is a $20-$35 cover.

Sonny Landreth will perform at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121 - ) on Friday, October 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Landreth's music has always been evocative, a vibrant mixture of indigenous sounds and images informed by Delta blues and Faulkner alike. But here, by eschewing lyrics and vocals, he's located something especially pure and unfettered. There is a $35 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO AT DIZZY'S

The Christian McBride Trio (Christian McBride, bass; Christian Sands, piano; and Ulysses Owens, Jr., drums) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Tuesday through Sunday, October 22nd through 27th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. GRAMMY Award winning bassist Christian McBride has appeared on over 300 recordings and is already considered one of the most accomplished bassists alive. After leading the Christian McBride Band and performing in the Five Peace Band with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, and Vinnie Colaiuta, McBride has channeled his energy and talent into the Christian McBride Trio. This jazz trinity, featuring Christian Sands on piano and Ulysses Owens, Jr. on drums, is rooted in the simplicity of storytelling through bluesy, straight-ahead jazz, with undertones of R&B and soul. Their raw and acoustic sound pays utmost respect to the "story" of the music, focused on earnest interpretations of tunes that are beaming with expression and bound together with unparalleled chemistry. There is a $35-$45-Cover (depending on date).
