NYC: BIRDLAND JAZZ PARTY With NATALIE DOUGLAS - EVERY SUNDAY
Natalie Douglas takes over the reins of the internationally renowned Birdland Jazz Club's "Jazz Party With Natalie Douglas" beginning Sunday, January 18th at 6:00 pm at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) . Joining Douglas will be her band, led by longtime musical director Mark Hartman. "Jazz Party" has most recently been hosted by Grammy-nominated vocalist Jane Monheit. Douglas, the seven-time MAC Award, Backstage Bistro Award and Nightlife Award Winner, has garnered rave reviews for her unique mix of jazz, blues, standards, pop, folk and country music. This past June, she received the 2014 Margaret Whiting Award onstage at Carnegie Hall from the Mabel Mercer Foundation & My Ideal Music. In September 2014, Natalie's portrait was added to the Birdland Jazz Club Wall of Fame. Her recent performances include concerts across the U.S. (Carnegie Hall, Birdland, Cafe Carlyle, and The Appel Room - formerly The Allen Room - at Lincoln Center) and across three continents (Montenegro, Greece, Corsica, Puerto Vallarta, London, Buenos Aires, Cancun & Germany.) In a Greenwich Village tradition, she also performs an annual New Year's Eve collaboration with Mark Hartman at the Duplex. Her solo recordings include her debut CD, Not That Different - which was nominated for a 2000 MAC Award for Outstanding Recording - and To Nina ... Live At Birdland, a concert recording of her one-woman show, To Nina: A Tribute to Nina Simone. Both CDs, available at iTunes and other outlets, continue to be featured on NPR and Sirius XM Radio. She also appears on Fine and Dandy for PS Classics and Broadway By The Year: 1940 on Bayview Records. Natalie is also an actor and can be seen in the feature film "The Camera's Eye," has appeared on ABC's "Cupid," and in many theatrical productions, including The People vs. Mona, Thalia Follies, theATrainplays (series 5-22) with The Neighborhood Playhouse, Hillside in Hell with 13th Street Rep and was a featured soloist at the York Theatre Company's benefit production of Children Of Eden at Riverside Church. NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. NYC: RAMSEY LEWIS: IN CROWD 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Ramsey Lewis celebrates the "In Crowd 50th Anniversary" at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, January 13th through 18th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Ramsey recently released his 80th collection of songs entitled "Ramsey, Taking Another Look". Ramsey has been an iconic leader in the contemporary jazz movement for over 50 years, with an unforgettable sound and outgoing personality that has allowed him to cross over to the pop and R&B charts. The Ramsey Lewis Trio, with bassist Eldee Young and percussionist Redd Holt, became a fixture on the Chicago jazz scene, releasing their debut album, Ramsey Lewis & His Gentlemen of Jazz, back in 1956. Lewis earned his first gold record, as well as a Grammy award for Best Jazz Performance, for their swinging version of Dobie Gray's hit "The In Crowd." He returned to the pop charts in 1966 with versions of "Hang On Sloopy" and "Wade In The Water." Throughout the years, Lewis' trio has undergone membership changes, all the while staying true to Lewis' high musical standards. After Young and Holt left Lewis' trio to form their own group, the pianist hired a new rhythm section with Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice White on drums. When White left the band to form Earth, Wind & Fire, Morris Jennings signed on as the trio's new percussionist. White returned to produce Lewis' 1974 smash album entitled Sun Goddess, in which Lewis first experimented with electronic keyboards and featured Earth, Wind & Fire on the album. In 1983, Lewis returned to the studio with Young and Holt for the album Reunion. Throughout his illustrious career, Lewis has also joined forces with countless other artists to create new and innovative music. In 1984, he collaborated with Nancy Wilson on The Two of Us; in 1988, he recorded with London's Philharmonia Orchestra for the album A Classic Encounter; and in 1989, Lewis and Dr. Billy Taylor cut a set of piano duets in We Meet Again. In 1995, Lewis launched the side project Urban Knights, in which he collaborated with a handful of successful crossover jazz stars, including Grover Washington, Jr., Earl Klugh, and Dave Koz. In 1997, Lewis added disc jockey to his resume, hosting a popular show on Chicago's WNUA-FM that ran until 2009. A new show was syndicated in 2006 under the name Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis and was broadcast on jazz radio stations across the country. In 2006, a well-received 13-episode Legends of Jazz television series hosted by Lewis was broadcast by PBS on public TV nationwide and featured live performances by a variety of jazz artists including Larry Gray, Lonnie Smith, Joey Defrancesco, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Kurt Elling, Benny Golson, Pat Metheny and Tony Bennett. NYC: WALTER BLANDING: TICK TOCK AT DIZZY'S
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra saxophonist Walter Blanding brings a world-class group (Walter Blanding, saxophone; Warren Wolf, vibraphone; Mark Whitfield, guitar; Bruce Harris, trumpet; Russell Hall, bass; Dan Nimmer, piano; Ulysses Owens, drums) to DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, January 16th through 18th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. They will perform his unrecorded composition Tick Tock, originally commissioned by the Savannah Music Festival. The piece received rave reviews at the festival, drawing comparisons to the work of Wayne Shorter, for its sophistication and utilization of brilliant soloists. Joining Blanding will be rising star vibraphonist Warren Wolf, a protege of living legend Bobby Hutcherson; prolific and versatile guitarist Mark Whitfield; trumpeter Bruce Harris, recently heard with the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars in After Midnight; and the young, rising star bassist Russell Hall. The lineup and repertoire make this a unique opportunity that jazz and international music fans should not miss.
